Notes: AKA California Woody. Photo may have been taken in the mid-'60s in MN at his parents' house. | Dave was driving the "Babler & Clark" car at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on April 2. He beat Dave McKenzie in the first round, with a 7.82/200.00 and in the second round, a 7.88/197.80 beat Don Hampton. In the semifinal, he lost to the eventual winner Mike Snively, in the "Hawaiian." The following week (April 9), he was back at Irwindale where he lasted until the second round before losing to Snively again. On April 23, Irwindale held another one of its weekly sixteen-car shows. Dave qualified #9 with a 7.89, but met the low qualifier, the "Hawaiian," in the first round. Babler tried hard, running a 7.68/209.40, but again he lost to Snively (7.45/210). Luck was on his side, however, when Nick Marshall had won his first-round race, but had lost his engine and was unable to run the second round. Dave got back in on the "break rule," having run the lowest ET of the first-round losers. He was reinstated. In the second round, he beat the "Howard Cam Special" with a 7.75/205.46. Dave ran his best time of the day in the semifinal, a 7.60/206.42, but he lost to a holeshot 7.63/196 by Jim Dunn. On May 1 he was a San Fernando for an eight-car event and while he didn't win or even make the final, he did set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.84/212.76. |
