Notes: Tom Hunt is set to debut this new blown '34-Ford AA/FA this year at Bowling Green during the Hot Rod Reunion. The body will interchange with the "Flying Purple People Eater" '74 Vega body (former Gene Snow, Bill Brown car) at select events. The altered paint scheme matches Tom's FED that is also part of his ever increasing collection of nostalgia racers. Rick Howard photo.

(Qualified on the bump 8th spot in the Big Bud Shootout. Lost to John Force in round one). | Bazemore first drove for Johnny West on July 10 at the Parts Plus Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Four Funny Cars ran at the meet and Whit was declared the overall winner when he beat Jerry Caminito with a 5.65 and Gary Bolger with a 5.61 at a track speed record of 264.90. His next outing was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.77/247.38 qualified #14, but a first-round 5.86/195.99 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.69/248. NHRA's next stop was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. There a 5.51/269.54 qualified #13. Whit lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Bazemore qualified #10 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.27/284.09. A first-round 5.28/285.17 failed to get past Gordie Bonin's 5.24/281. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen spots available so qualifying was not a problem. Still, Whit ran 5.61/266.98 to qualify #12. A first-round 5.53/270.83 beat Hoover's 5.63/203. In the second round, Bazemore showed his driving skills when his 5.31/275.22 beat Hofmann's quicker and faster 5.26/280. His run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to Cruz Pedregon.

A 5.17/280.63 qualified #9, but he fell off to a 5.84/195.48 in the opening round that lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.21/268. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Bazemore qualified #14 with a 5.30/232.61. A first-round 5.45/228.54 did him no good against Hofmann's 5.09/298. The next event was the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. It was only an eight-car show and Whit qualified #7 with a 5.32/281.07. His 5.38/281.42 in the first round, lost to Pedregon's 5.22/293. A week later (April 21), he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. The team was stuck in the 5.30s, only running a best of 5.38/279.06 to qualify #10. A first-round 5.37/286.89 narrowly beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.39/219. In round two, opponent Jeff Arend broke and Whit advanced with a 5.58/200.26. He then made his best run of the weekend, a 5.34/286.07, but it wasn't enough to beat Tony Pedregon's 5.05/296 in the semis.

Notes: Rick Howard qualifying photo from 1992 NHRA SpringNats, Columbus. Same car from 1991. Gary made one of the most impressive runs of "ANYBODY" in '92 with a 5.11 blast at Ennis, TX. | Gary started the season by qualifying #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.41/263.00. He lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.44/256.99 qualified #8. Another 5.44/262.00 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's career-best 5.26/273. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.43/266.27. A tire-smoking 5.90/174.41 in the first round, lost to Hofmann's 5.30/272. Gainesville saw him run 5.48/267.61 to qualify #15 for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary stepped up to a career-best (to this point) of 5.23/275.39 to beat Hofmann in the first round. In the second round, both he and Mark Oswald smoked the tires, but Bolger recovered first to win with a 6.03/162.19. A strong 5.27/273.80 in the semifinals lost to Jim Epler's 5.22/270. The fifth NHRA event of the season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Gary ran 5.48/265.33 to qualify #15. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Gary Densham's 5.57/265. After that, it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary qualified #12 with a 5.57/265.87. He lost in the first round, to Del Worsham. In mid-June, Bolger was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gordon Mineo. He qualified #12 with a 5.56/269.38. At the end of June, he traveled up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He got his best qualifying spot of the year when he ran 5.38/271.24 to qualify #4. In his first-round race, opponent Dale Barlet crossed the centerline, and Gary had troubles and could only muster a 6.39/239.17. The trouble was terminal, and he was unable to run Oswald in the second round. Englishtown hosted the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals in July. Gary qualified #13 with a 5.59/245.56. In the first round, he broke a blower drive and lost to Chuck Etchells. The tenth race of the NHRA season was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Gary ran 5.55/256.62 to qualify #8, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round one.

Notes: Gary started his season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.24/271.65. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. The team had trouble at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, and Gary's best of 6.13/198.89 failed to make the field. Things were much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.32/251.80 qualified #9. A 5.34/264.78 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.21/289. Bolger had a good showing at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.41/264.86. A first-round 5.35/262.54 beat Pulde's 5.82/240. In round two, a 5.32/268.57 took out Whit Bazemore's 5.50/209. Unfortunately, he spun the tires in the semifinals and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.17/284. At the NHRA Winston Invitational, Gary had some good luck/bad luck going on. First, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show running a best of 5.54/264.08 for the first alternate. Then Bazemore blew an engine in his already qualified car, and the resulting fire kept him out of eliminations. Bolger took his place in the field and then promptly smoked his tires in his first-round race against Hofmann. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals at the end of April. Gary qualified #11 with a 5.34/272.39. He beat a tire-smoking Del Worsham in the first round with a 5.41/268.89. In round two, his 5.40/264.47 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.28/269. Gary followed the NHRA tour to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, where his 5.63/257.65 qualified #14. He improved to 5.39/264.39 in the first round to beat Hofmann's 5.50/269, but the car hurt some parts, and Bolger could not make his second-round race against Hoover. It was then on to Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. A 5.31/269.05 qualified #12, but a better 5.29/266.19 in the first round lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/277. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #12 with a 5.36/269.29. A 5.41/250.62 in the first round, lost to Hofmann's 5.30/280. Shortly after that, he was at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #14 at 5.54/241.61, and a 5.66/237.21 fell to Hofmann's 5.33/281 in the first round. On July 10, he was at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show. He lost to Bazemore in the final. At Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary ran 5.61/247.18 to qualify #10. In round one, his 5.68/235.97 lost to John Force's 5.45/266. The following week, the team was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Bolger's 5.51/235.41 qualified #12, and in the first round, he lost a blower belt, and his 5.55/214.38 fell to Etchell's 5.47/270. The next stop was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.30/262.69 qualified #12, and this time his 5.34/268.73 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.21/284 in round one. DNQ for "main show" at Indy. Gary was 18th overall with a best of 5.35/264.00. Qualified 6th for Big Bud Shootout. Lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy.

Notes: Bolger started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.27/284.36. In round one, a better 5.24/284.53 fell to Dale Pulde's 5.23/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.33/284.27 qualified #14. In the opening round, he picked up to a 5.24/283.55 to beat Richard Hartman, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Car owner Dale Creasy installed a computer in the car for the first time at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Qualifying there wasn't much of an issue as only 16 cars showed. Still, Gary's 5.31/272.56 was the slowest of the bunch. In the opening round of eliminations, Bolger's 5.63/200.57 fell to low qualifier Al Hofmann's 5.13/295. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals held at Houston. A 5.30/283.55 qualified #15, and Gary lost to Tim Wilkerson in the first round. The team did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. Once again, only 16 cars showed in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A Super Stock-like time of 10.95/72.45 qualified #14 (two cars were slower!). But once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Gary Densham. Early in May, the team was at Richmond for the NHRA Virginia Nationals. A strong 5.18/278.20 qualified #9. After that, things went wrong. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.53/206.18, but that came with the engine blowing and causing the car to turn into a fireball. The body was completely destroyed. Gary was alright, but the car was done, and there was no way it could be repaired for a round-two battle against John Force. Gary didn't miss a beat and was back behind the wheel at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #12 with a 5.29/275.48. Unfortunately, he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. Bolger failed to qualify for the Big Go with a best of 5.28/287.53 but managed to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout. He lost in round one, to John Force (photo). Gary's best times of the year came in a round two loss to John Force at Topeka, 4.94/308 to 5.099/292.49. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.
