Notes: Won Indy 1972 as many other top drivers attended the competing PRA race at Tulsa. Still, a huge achievement over a huge field. Ran 9.56 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/72. | Ray Allen's Vega didn't debut until mid-season. He was at Englishtown on July 9 where he won over a eight car field. He got to solo in the final for the win and ran 9.98/135.13. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified the car #21 in the 32 car field. He lost to Mike Fons' 9.72 in the opening round with a 9.83. He ran at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Cayuga where he made it into the final against another Vega, that of Rich Mirarcki. The two had a good race, but Ray's 9.73/139.75 finished second best to Rich's 9.67/141. Then came his big win at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32 car field and he qualified #3 with a 9.67/141.85. A first-round 9.71/142.85 beat Irv Beringhaus while in round two he beat Larry Huff. He had a tough race against Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson's SOHC Maverick in round three, but his 9.61 beat Ken's 9.70. He quickened his pace to a 9.56 at 143.54 (Top Speed) in the semifinals while beating Ron Hutter. This set up another final between him and Mirarcki. This time Allen got the upper hard with his 9.58 getting the victory over Mirarcki's 9.80. |
