Notes: Car started its life with a 421 Pontiac punched out to 440" and running ultra-ultra-rate Mickey Thompson hemi heads before reliability dictated the switch to an early 392 Hemi. An Irwindale ad says this car ran 8.55, and the Hot Rod Yearbook #6 says the best speed was 164.97. (We need confirmation of those times, slightly better than the timeslip-derived numbers provided here.) Liberman started 1966 in his "Hercules" Chevy II before teaming up with Lew Arrington to make his name with this car. He finished 1966 behind the wheel of his new Chevy II. Liberman did drive the GTO early in 1967, as did owner Lew Arrington. The car was sold to Don Williamson in 1968, and was destroyed in a crash later that year with future altered driver Jim Trillo at the wheel. - RT and DD | Jim had Lew's car out at Irwindale for some test passes on June 18. He made three runs with times of 10.25/146.10/10.16/151.51, and a 10.03/141.50. The next day (June 19), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Jim really picked up the pace, running 9.39/147.05 in his first-round solo followed by a 9.45/150.75 in the semifinals that lost to Dick Landy's 9.19/154. Landy's car had problems and was unable to make the final so Liberman got back in on the "break rule." He faced Jack Chrisman in the final. Jack was on a tear, running 8.7's throughout eliminations. The final round was no different as Jack took the victory with an 8.71 over Jim's one second slower 9.70. On June 25, Liberman faced Al Vanderwoude's "Flying Dutchman" in a best of three at Irwindale. Liberman won the match by winning all three races with a best of 9.41/155.97. As the season progressed, "Brutus" continued to get stronger. At Irwindale on July 23, Jim beat Roger Wolford in the "Secret Weapon" Jeep two straight, running 10.15/157.06 and 9.41/160.14 to win the match. After the match race, Jim made a single run at 9.19/161.29. The following day (July 24), he won the AHRA World Championships at Lions. An 8.91 in the first round, beat Dee Keaton's Comet and in the semifinals, he recorded a 9.17/161.87 to beat Steve Bovan. He faced Wolford in the final and the Jeep lost a clutch so Jim grabbed the win, hitting 162.16. By September, the eights were the norm for "Brutus." A rematch between Liberman and Vanderwoude was run at Fresno on September 17 and Jim won two straight over the "Flying Dutchman" with times of 8.85/161 and 8.88/161.57. After winning the match he came back out and ran a single at 8.59/163.93. Another rematch was held at Lions on September 24 against the "Secret Weapon" of Wolford. Jim again won the match, running an 8.84/162.16 best. Jim took a loss on October 9 at Carlsbad. It was a best of three match against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. Jim won the first race when both ran below normal times. Liberman's 9.26/158.45 beat the unblown Mustang's 9.49/152. But Ronda came back to win the next two races and the match. An 8.89/160 beat Jim's 9.05/159.01 in the second race and in the third race, Liberman'S 8.99/160.71 lost to Gaspar's 8.90/160. Jim's own car was nearing completion and his days of driving for Arrington were numbered. On October 15 he drove the "Brutus" to a best of three match race victory over Maynard Rupp's "Chevoom," a rear-engined, Hemi-powered Chevelle. Jim won the match two straight, running 8.89/144.69 and 8.77/162.72.
