Notes: Johnny White debuted his new Mustang II in March at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did pretty well, considering it was its first time out. White qualified in the top half of the field (#6) at 6.412/182.92, and an opening round 6.84/200.00 beat Stan Bowman, who smoked the tires. But in round two, the car broke, which advanced his opponent, Don Prudhomme. John was at LaPlace Dragway later in March for the NHRA Division 4 opener. He set Low ET at 6.41 and in the final, his 6.54 beat Larry Fullerton for the victory. John was at Tulsa in May for the AHRA Okie Nationals, where he lasted until round two before his quicker 6.80/206.88 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.95/219. His next stop was back at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #3 with a 6.72/202.24. He blew a rear end in the first round, but was still able to beat Randy Lackey, who had gotten out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Emery in the semifinals. White lost early in eliminations at Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He ended the month of May by winning Houston's Spring Funny Car Festival race on the 31st. He had Low ET in qualifying with a 6.79 and then ran 7.30/186 over Mike Young and 7.23/191 over Jerry Jefferson to reach the final. There he faced Paul Smith, who fouled and sent John to a 6.92/193 victory. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.789/216.34 was the fifth alternate. John was the low qualifier at IHRA Bristol with a 6.40/205.94. He also ran 6.50 at Riverside Raceway WWCS 1976. John qualified #15 at Indy at 6.267/216.34 and lost a close one to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.28/234 to 6.339/225.56. He was the third alternate at NHRA Seattle at 6.808/197.80 and was the second alternate at NHRA Ontario at 6.480/217.39. |
