Notes: Division 2 Champion in 1971. Paul won the NHRA Division 2 Opener on April 4. He qualified #1 and then went on to beat Wayne Mahaffey in the final. He also won the NHRA Division Two final held at Gainesville in September. His 8.19/181.96 in the final was enough as Wayne Mahaffey smoked the tires against him in the final. At the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo, Paul qualified #7 for the East at 7.969/176.47. In round one, he lost to Jerry Ruth, 7.10/209 to 8.79/107.01. |

Notes: On March 6, Paul Smith drove the car at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland. He lost to Fritz Callier in the first round. Not sure who was driving it on April 30 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but in the first round, the Cougar lost to Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." This car had a Ford SOHC at some point. |

Notes: Sid started driving this car early in June. He was in Tyler, Texas, for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Burkhart on June 7. He won the match. Times he reeled off since jumping behind the wheel included 7.52/199.10 at Memphis on June 11. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.91/192.71, beat Mike Burkhart in the first round, with a 7.79/196.50, but lost to Tom McEwen in the second round, 7.67/185 to Foster's 7.60/201.79. He still managed to have the fastest Ford Funny Car at the meet with the 201.79 pass. On June 27, he went to Courtland, Tenn., and ran 7.51. He then reset the ET record at National Trail with a 7.63/201.79 on June 29. Sid raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk on July 4, but an 8.03/185.04 lost to Dean LaPole in Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round. The next day it was off to Blaney, S.C., where he set another track record at 7.93/200.44. Another best-of-three-match race was run at LaPlace on July 20 against Don Gay's "Infinity" GTO. Sid won the first race with an 8.51/174.41 when Roy Gay got out of shape and hit the guardrail with minor damage to the GTO. Gay evened the score in the second race, winning with an 8.02/189 over the Torino's quicker 7.99/188.28. Foster lost an engine on the line in the third race, and Gay soloed to the match race victory. The following week (July 27), the "Super Ford" was at Southland Dragway for a best of three match against Leonard Hughes in the "Candies & Hughes" 'Cuda. Foster won the first race by default with an 8.15 when the 'Cuda broke a transmission in the first race. A new trans was installed, and in the second race, Hughes' 7.48/203 beat Sid's 7.83/191.89. In the third and deciding race, Foster ran a strong 7.67 but still lost to Leonard's 7.57/203. Foster lost to Gene Snow at Rockford Manufacturer's meet but beat Pat Minick with a 7.75/196.50 and Arnie Beswick with a 7.85. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Wood at Palmetto on August 9. Sid fouled in the first round while running a 7.72/194; the run also cost him a transmission. Wood won the first race with a 7.56/198, then singled to two more wins when the Super Ford couldn't return. A big win came at the AHRA Drag World Championships. There he beat Bob Sullivan in the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals but failed to crack the 7.54 "bump." On September 6, he ran at Bristol for the AHRA All-American. Sid beat Jim Maybeck in the first round, with a 7.80, before losing to Ronnie Runyan in round two. He lost early at Nashville's King of the Funnys race on September 13, where Runyan got him again, this time in the first round. On October 4, Foster showed up at the National Dragster open at National Trail. He was gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 198.67. On his first and only pass, he ran 202.74 but could not stop the car and crashed into the safety net. Sid was OK, but the Torino body was crunched up. He raced Wood again in mid-October for another best of three match at Shelby Country. Wood fouled in the first race, but Sid still managed to drive past him with a 7.49/201.78, tying the track speed record. In the second race, the Ford's transmission let go, and Bobby won with a 7.59/193, but in the last race, Sid sewed up the match by setting both ends of the track record with a 7.41/202.24 blast that beat Wood, who fouled again. On November 2, he raced at the Sears Point North/South Championships. The car ran well, hitting a 7.89/194.60, but he failed to make the finals. Sid qualified second on the Ford team at OCIR on November 7, and after the renewed, he returned on November 16 for their manufacturers meet; Sid won the first round with a motor blowing 8.11/186.72. But that was the only run he made due to the blown engine. According to a Drag News issue from November '69, Sid had mentioned that the car had run a best of 7.11/209. No mention of where these times were run. (Drag News 11/69) Ran 7.74 at first Annual Manufacturers' Championships at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway. - RT | Also 196.06 at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., 7/69 | As far as I know, this car always campaigned with a Cammer. In 1970 the Mustang had a 426 installed to run at the manufacturer's meet, but Sid insisted that the SOHC was back for the next meet. |

Notes: Larry was at Irwindale for its New Year's Day Race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Arnold's 7.06/205.94 qualified #3. A first-round 7.15/180.72 advanced, but he lost in round two. His next stop was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American of '71. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify, and Larry's 7.08 just made the show. In the opening round, his 7.12 beat Don Schumacher's off-pace 7.35, but the "Kingfish" came up to the line ailing in round two and lost to Stan Shiroma. Irwindale held a four-car, pre-Winternationals race. Larry qualified #2 with a 7.05/211.76 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.21/178.21 beat Randy Walls, who lost an engine. In the final, he went up against Jake Johnston. The two had a great race, with both running 7.15 (Arnold at 209.78), but the "Kingfish" got the win light. Unfortunately, he didn't run nearly that well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, as he failed to qualify. He qualified #4 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.84/217.39, but opponent Wayne Mahaffey failed to fire in the opening round. So, Larry went on a single that saw his motor blow, and he coasted through with a 9.32 to advance. Arnold was unable to repair for his second-round race against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster." Larry won the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario in November with best times of 6.84/212. |

Notes: Lou had a bit of trouble in April at Miami-Hollywood's Big Go South race. He had one of the ten Funny Cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. He failed to qualify the car but returned later to make a check-out pass. Unfortunately, the accelerator jammed wide open while backing up from his burnout. The car bounced off the retaining wall before hitting some cars in the staging lanes. The only one hurt in the mishap was Dempsey Hardy, who was taken to the hospital and released shortly after. Lou's pocketbook probably took a hurting, too. After getting the car repaired, he reportedly won 65% of his match races, beating some of the better-known drivers/teams. Included in that list were the "Ramchargers," the "Mr. Norm" car, Tom Hoover, Fred Goeske, and Mike Burkhart, among others. The best ET and speed during '72 was a 6.81/210 at New York National on August 20. |

Notes: Lou was driving the "Fireball Vega at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals. On March 4, he got out of shape and crossed into Preston Davis's lane during qualifying. The Tennessee Bo-Weevil Mustang ran headfirst into the Vega. Both cars were damaged pretty badly, but both drivers were OK. |

Notes: Jim Barillaro built the Torino personally in 1969 with help from Ford and John Healey of Tasca Ford. Limited finances kept the car from being a serious contender, but it was a consistent 7-second car in 1969 and 1970. Ran 7.99 in Connecticut. Jim debuted the car in Connecticut on September 7, but he parked it due to traction problems, and Kosty Ivanof filled in for him. |

Notes: Car new in 1976. Bob was at Suffolk on July 18 for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. He ran well, reaching the final against Paul Smith. It was a close race as Paul's 6.85/202 just nipped Barry's 6.86/201. Ran a confirmed 7.025/213.76 at NHRA Sanair. Qualified #6, but lost in round one, to Gordie Bonin, falling off to a 7.82/124. Sixth alternate at the NHRA Summernationals. No time available. We need confirmation of the 6.48/231.36. |

Notes: The Logghe Bros built the "Ramchargers" new '72 ride. It used a 114" wheelbase and weighed 1,815 lbs. A Lenco two-speed transferred the 1,800 hp back to the magnesium 4.88 Dana rear end. The Hemi is stroked to 480, and it used Brooks rods, Venolia pistons, and General Kinetics cam. Enderle injection feeds the 98% nitro into the motor. The Demon body was made by J&E and painted by Customs Unlimited. Arnie was the 7th alternate at the NHRA WInternationals (times not reported). He was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.79. In the opening round of eliminations, Bobby Woods fouled against him, and Arnie advanced with a 7.08. He got another easy pass in round two when Fritz Callier shut off with a broken oil filter. In the semifinals, he faced eventual winner Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max." Arnie got out of shape, and Tharp ran 6.61 to win. The "Ramchargers" next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Behling would rather forget this race as the Demon broke a rear-end during qualifying, and Arnie hit the ditch at the end of the turnoff road. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By May, Jim Paoli was behind the wheel of this car. |

Notes: Bernstein was the second driver in this car. Bernstein was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.79 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.10/142.40 beat Dee Simmons. In round two, Kenny got crossed up and shut down against eventual winner Mike Snively. Kenny was at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals in May. He qualified #12 with a 7.73 (easy show to get in), but he lost to eventual winner Jim Paoli in the first round. Early in July, Baton Rouge held its Louisiana State Summer Championships. Four Funny Car's ran, including Bernstein. He had lost to George Cox's "Banzai" but got back into the show as the Low ET loser. It was the "Banzai" car that Ken had to race in the final. The Charger failed to fire, so Bernstein would make an all-out solo for the win. The car left hard, but at the 1/8 mile, the "LA Hooker" exploded into flames. Bernstein got the Mustang stopped and had second-degree burns on his hands. The "Hooker" was totally destroyed. |

Notes: Dick's Mustang was one of the toughest of the Ford brigade in early '66. He won the fuel Funny Car class at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Wayne Darnaby in the final with a 9.21/139.75. Brannan beat Bob Harrop in a best two-out-of-three match at Lakeland in March. He won all three races with times of 9.29, 9.27, and a shut off 10.61 when Harrop fouled. Dick retired from racing Funny cars after Les Richey's accident on May 1. He was a good friend as well as a teammate to Les who lost his life at Fontana. - RH |

Notes: Fred Goeske owned through 1969 then sold to Bush & Brown. We need to confirm that Brown did not drive Neil 1970. (Goeske had both this car and his Rodrunner at Indy 1969) per Dennis Doubleday. |

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation. |
