Notes: First in the 8's. Set NHRA speed record at Lions Drag Strip at 166.97 on February 3, 1957. Also ran 159 and 165.13 on the same day, smashing the existing 157 mph record. This incredible speed (with an unblown, carbureted engine) caused organization officials to freak out and institute the nitro ban. Photo from Don Garlits' museum in Ocala, Florida. Cook was at Famoso on April 7, where he ran a track record 8.89. He also had Top Speed of the day at 163.35. | Cook and Bedwell 1957 - February 2 - day of the big runs, in order - 9.880/159.01 tied current world record, 2nd pass - 9.800/165.13 - the was the final. He just ran the fastest speed in history by six mph. MT asked him to stick around and make another run - then made a single after the final - 10.020/166.97! Then went to Bakersfield on April 7 - 163.35 at 8.890 - then on May 5, he went to Colton and went 168.85 on a 9.450 pass. He and two or three other cars were shipped to Hawaii in 1957 to run at Kahuku Air Base - the big drag strip in Hawaii. He ran over 160 there! Four days - July 4 through July 7, 1957 - Thursday through Sunday - 1st annual Hawaii summer Invitational drag racing championships. Cook first run-on Thursday 9.19/157.89 in front of 4000 people on Thursday. Richer in Nesbit Car 9.49/153.84, Cortopassi class 9.84/142.38, then local guys - Longie Gandall 10.33/136, local guy. Second day - Bruce Geisler - sports car day two - Fred Watanabe - motorcycle - promoter Jimmy Sujiyama - Cook then ran Friday and Saturday but not faster than they had - Cook - 166.96 Sunday July 7 - 9.89 to win top eliminator honors! 3000 fans. - Bret Kepner |

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a rear-mounted 354" Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Records set in 1960 include an 8.03/175.78 at Davis-Monthan in Tuscon (probably bogus), a 180.72 backed up by a 179.28 on October 2, and the Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark of 183.67 mph set eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Info courtesy NHRA Museum. Photo of restoration taken in 2003. - TD | After the 8.03 on March 27, he returned and went 8.53 a week later. |

Notes: The team started the year by running 188.66 to set Top Speed at the Pomona Winternationals. They also ran 187.86 on that day. Ran 8.03/192.30 to set the A/FD NHRA national record speed at the NW Division Grand Finale at Bellingham WA 9/29/63, which was recognized as the fastest speed in the sport. - RT | Also reported to have run 7.89 that day. The ET needs validation. Photo of Norm Weekly at Bakersfield's annual Hot Rod Reunion in 2003 with a repro of the famous racecar. You could pay $100, and they'd let you sit in the cockpit while they cranked it up. I'll bet they had the throttle linkage disconnected, though. |
