Notes: In January '80, ND reported that at the Fremont Opener, Raymond Beadle ran 5.92/244. Beadle ran at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car turned out to be a handful there as he lost to John Force in the opening round, where the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. He again was forced to shut down in his second race when he got out of shape against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." At Pomona, the team waived its points for the NHRA Winternationals. Beadle qualified #3 with a 6.06/243.90. He went into a wheelstand in the first round and shut off, giving Colson the win. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9, and the "Blue Max" ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.24/233.76 to win over Billy Meyer's close 6.27/230. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.13 and, in the first round, beat Tom McEwen with a 5.99/238.09. In the second round, a 6.06/227.27 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/233. A piston-burning 6.11/207.85 beat Tom Ridings' 6.46/180 in Joe Pisano's car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Don Prudhomme, who had just run 5.93 in the other semifinal race. Beadle tried hard in the final, but his 6.17/231.95 was good for the runner-up spot to the "Snake's" 5.98/238. He went to Darlington the following week (March 23) and cleaned up. The only thing he didn't get was the pole. He qualified #2 with a 6.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28 beat a tire-smoking Burgin, and a 6.29 beat John Force in the semifinals. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. Raymond capped off the weekend by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.06/237.46 to win the event. He then set Low ET and Top Speed while winning the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley on March 30. The win put the "Blue Max" into the lead in NHRA points. Things did not go well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where the team failed to qualify. A best of 6.23/238.09 failed to better the 6.18 "bump." Raymond toured England this year, too. He came out with a new Omni to run the second half of the season. |

Notes: At the 1972 NHRA Gatornationals, Butch qualified at 6.636/209.79 and ran 6.65/215.82 in a first-round win over Tom Hoover. He lost in the second round to eventual runner-up Larry Arnold, 6.67/219 to 6.82/200. During the first weekend in May at New York National, he won a 16-car booked-in show with a best of 6.55/220. Butch qualified #8 at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable) and won a first-round matchup with Ron Potter, 6.84/191 to 7.24. He lost. He beat Don Schumacher in round two, 6.74/203.16 but lost in the semis to Leonard Hughes, 7.38/212 to 10.00-82. Butch won the Mr. Chevrolet event at Capitol Raceway, MD, and he qualified at 6.728/218.44 at Tulsa PRA in August (was that in this car or the Hawaiian?) | Al Bergler's '72 Vega, Logghe Chassis, J&E body, Kirby paint, Keith Black Hemi with a Lenco 2 speed. Butch Maas drove the car that year, winning Mr. Chevrolet at Capitol Raceway. I got the et and speed info from "Ben Brown on Funny Cars" in the August 1972 issue of Car Craft. - Tom Nagy |

Notes: Sherm only ran two NHRA national events in 1988, and he had a tough time at both. At Pomona for the Winters, he was fifth alternate at 6.929/143.03. His next race was the California Nationals at Somona in late July. Not only did he fail to qualify, he suffered a blower explosion on a 7.191/166.11 attempt. |

Notes: Gary qualified #6 at the Miami-Hollywood Funny Car Nationals in January with a 6.89. He failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, the track was terrible, and he ended up as the twelfth alternate for the show. Henderson also failed to qualify at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals in March, but he got into the show when Preston Davis and Lou Azar (Fireball Vega) crashed during qualifying. It didn't help Gary much as his 7.18/173.74 lost to Don Schumacher's 7.00/207 in the first round. Gary was the second alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.974/205.47. Late in June, he was at Southland Dragways for a best of three match against Preston Davis, driving the "Tennesee Bo-Weevil." Both cars failed to start for their first scheduled race. After towing back to the pits, they returned for another try. This time only Davis' car failed to fire. So Henderson ran a piston-burning 6.61/216.23 to win. The third race was also a solo as Gary was busy changing the pistons in the "Super Duster," so Preston ran a 7.02/197 solo. The match was declared a draw. Henderson did pretty well match racing at Lakeland in mid-August. He had a best of three match against Willie Borsch. Gary won three straight with times of 6.78, 6.84, and 6.91. The next day, he faced Shirl Greer, where he won two out of three. He finished in the middle of a pack of 36 non-qualifiers at Indy with a solid 6.69/219.51. That was his last national event of the year. |

Notes: Pedregon started the season by qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a track record 5.01 at 297.02 (Low ET and Top Speed). In round one, his 5.28/264.23 beat Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, in round two, his 5.25/283.01 lost to Dean Skuza's fireballing 5.22/285. He "only" qualified #12 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.35/273.30. The car "woke up" in eliminations by running 5.20/279.06 over Jim Epler's 5.61/190 in the opening round. He then shaved off another tenth in round two, where his 5.10/287.72 stopped Hoover. Cruz had a close race with Chuck Etchells in the semi-final that saw Pedregon's 5.18/278.63 get the better of Etchells' 5.20/247. He faced John Force in the final, which was another good race, but Force's 5.18/288 won over Cruz's 5.19/253.68. |

Notes: Three successive class bests in 1973: 6.35 and 6.27 at Indy (won Funny Car Eliminator over the Ace in the final), then a fantastic 6.16 at the Supernationals. When Don didn't like his new '74 US Army Vega, this car was pulled out of the garage, painted in US Army colors, and won Indy again. 6.29 Green Valley | In 1973, Prudhomme singlehandedly won the team title for Plymouth over a 16-car field at the 5th Annual Manufacturer's Meet at Rockford, Ill. - RT | Photo from 1973 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. | Early in '73, Don was still racing his Top Fuel car. He didn't enter his Funny Car in competition at the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals; he ran in Top Fuel instead. But on March 11, he showed up at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with his 'Cuda. He qualified #9 and, in the first round, set Low ET of the meet with a 6.45 to beat low qualifier Tom Hoover who ran 6.56. In round two, he faced Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega panel. Don fouled away a 6.60/209.30, giving Brown an easy 7.09 run into the semifinals. The following week, he was at NHRA Gatornationals but was back in the top fuel car. He was back in the Funny Car for the Seattle Northwest Open in April. He ran a 6.43 to qualify, but in the first round, he lost a rod while doing his burnout. On April 11, he was at the AHRA Grand American in Tulsa. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 6.50/226.13 qualified #1. He had a clutch explode during eliminations and hit the guardrail, thus ending his day. The car was wearing black primer from being repaired when he showed up at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships on April 21. He set Top Speed at 230.76, but after making a first-round solo, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified while racing Gerry Glenn. The following week, he was in Seattle for its Northwest Open. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.54/229 (Top Speed), but while doing his burnout for his first-round race against Rich Rogers, a rod let go, and he had to shut down. There were no shortages of places for Don to run as everywhere he raced, a crowd followed. He was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American early in May. He qualified #1 at 6.37 and then beat Mart Higginbotham and Dale Pulde (MT Grand Am). He then defeated Don Schumacher in the semifinal with an engine blowing 6.29. He would face Tom Grove in the final. Grove's car failed to fire, so Prudhomme limped it down the track for the win. |

Notes: World champion in 1976. Ran 5.978 at Indy to qualify number one. Also 6.026 at Winters and duplicated it at the Ontario Finals. Both the Winternationals 6.02 and Indy 5.97 were national records (the 5.987 at Ontario 75 was not backed up). Went 235.60 at Sanair 76 and 240.00 at Ontario 76. Did Don run 247.93 somewhere? Formerly listed that, but removed it until we get confirmation. Ran 6.24 Gainesville Dragway track record. Won 7 of 8 NHRA National events in '76; his only loss was to Burgin at Indy. Great article on HotRod.com with Snake describing his performance advantage over the rest of the Funny Car field in '75 and '76. |

Notes: At the 1972 Lions Grand Premiere (January 15/16) Bobby made it to the final losing a close race to Gene Snow 6.55/226.13 against a winning 6.54/222.77. Bobby was at the wheel of the Hawaiian for only a short time in early 1972. Bobby left to drive for Don Schumacher and was replaced by Leroy Chadderton who was driving the Hawaiian at Bakersfield during the March Meet. |
