Notes: Blown fuel-110.5" wheelbase, A&A Fiberglass fenders, bumper, hood. Don drove this car in 1965, and early 1966. His brother Roy drove this the rest of 1966. Car was sold to Bobby Moore and Tim Kushi of Pittsfield, Mass., who ran the car as fuel funny car in 1967. Car was so bent, twisted from years of racing and wheelstands, that it was scrapped. No longer exists. |

Notes: Grove was driving this car early in the year at Fremont for a best of five match race against Steve Bovan's Nova. Grove was having trouble this day as the best he could run was 9.96/145.63, and he lost the match to the Chevy that ran a best of 9.44/152. | Injected fuel. Notes: Bill ran injected gas into at least the 9.70s. We need to confirm that Bill ran all these times on gas. Otherwise, edit the injected nitro entry to add these 8-second notes and revert to 9.73 at Irwindale 66 (2/18/66 Drag World) | 145.16 MPH at Deland 66 (8/26/66 Drag News) for gas. He also ran the car on fuel. He may have run the car early in 1967. Tube AWB chassis. It started in 1966 as "Mystery 9," later was "Mystery 8." | Lawton had a great year in '66. It began by winning the Gas Funny Car class at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Gas Ronda in the final with a 9.78/140.40, beating Ronda's 9.85/141. He was at DeLand Drag Stip in February for the NASCAR Winter Championships. Right off the trailer, he ran 10.03/142 on a warm-up run. He lost to fellow Ford runner Phil Bonner in the Handicap Ultra Stock eliminations. However, Lawton still wasn't out of it, as NASCAR had its Heads-Up class for the low eight stockers. Only three fuel-injected SOHC Ford's were on hand, and they all qualified easily. Bill then beat Melvin Yow and Bud Faubel to reach the final, facing Bonner again. He then ran 10.15/138 for the victory over Bonner's Falcon. The following weekend, the race at DeLand continued. In the Handicap class, Lawton lost to Dick Brannan in the semifinal. In the Heads-Up class, Bill went 10.06/145.16 over Faubel in the opening round, and in the semifinal, his 9.83/144.92 beat Dave Strickler's 10.25/136. Once again, the final was between Lawton and Bonner. Bill missed a shift this time and had to settle for the runner-up spot to Phil's 10.03/140. On April 10, he had a best-of-three-match race with the "Ramchargers" at Connecticut. Bill beat the "Ramchargers" driver Jim Thornton three straight with runs of 9.07/153.84, a 9.15/153.84 when Jim fouled, and a final 9.00/155.97 to take the match. On April 17, he beat Malcolm Durham three straight at Englishtown with a best of 9.14. The following week on April 24, he dumped Ronnie Sox three straight at Aquasco. His best there was an 8.97/153.06. He took a hit on his home track, Connecticut, on May 15 when Bill Flynn in the "Yankee Peddler" beat him three straight. He won the Cecil County Factory Showdown on May 22. He ran a 9.40 in the first round when the "Ramchargers" fouled. A second-round 9.16 beat Cecil County Yother, and in the semifinals, he got an odd lot single. He beat Phil Bonner in the final with a 9.04/155.44. He had a rematch with Flynn at Connecticut on June 26 and beat him. |
