Notes: New rear-engine dragster in 1973. On April 15, Jim was at Cecil County for its National Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.79 qualified #7. He had a coasting contest with Paul Longenecker in the first round when both cars broke. Grace's 10.42/87.37 beat Longenecker's 22.26/31. But the car was still not right for the semifinal, as it died on the line against eventual winner Dale Thierer. In May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car show, and his 6.48 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Thierer. Dale blew a head gasket in their race and slowed to 7.77 while Jim advanced at 6.75/166.05. In the semifinal, his 6.45/221.13 fell to Flip Schofield's 6.31/210. Jim qualified #6 at NHRA Englishtown at 6.195/225.56. He lost to Marvin Schwartz in round one, 6.33/227 to 6.533/220.04. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. Jim also ran 6.29 at Atco. Front engine dragster in 1972, then switched to RED in 1973. Oberhofer father of Jim & Dave Oberhofer |

Notes: 1969 US Nationals. Ran as AA/GS, too. (Stock displacement 427 Cammer with C-6 trans. Car weight 2,150 lbs. fiberglass '67 Mustang body by Cal Automotive, painted "metalflake Easter Bunny blue." - RT) | The 1967 Mustang Malco Gasser debuted at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. This was the car that changed the Gassers forever. It was at corporate Ford's insistence that "Ohio George" race what Ford sold. This car proved so superior in handling and performance that the "World's Wildest Willys" was permanently retired. The Malco Gasser was powered by a 671 Blown 427 cubic inch SOHC Ford engine that made approximately 1200 HP on pump gas and was raced until May 1975. It was chosen for the 1967 Car Craft All-Star Drag Team. George set 5 NHRA National records with this car and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 NHRA Spring Nationals. The Malco Gasser is now on display at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, California. |

The Malco Gasser is now on display at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, California. Montgomery had his new Mustang at Kil-Kare Dragway on April 14. It was his first time back at the track since 1960. He only made one pass, but it was a good one, an early shut-off 8.85. George was at Aquasco Speedway on July 21 for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 8.86/161.57 beat Paul Frost's 9.10/128. In the semifinal, Jack Coonrod's 9.07/154 could do nothing with Montgomery's 8.83/161.87. He faced off against K.S. Pittman in the final. The two left the line together in the final, but the Mustang steadily pulled ahead to win with an 8.74/163.04 over Pittman's 8.88/159. On July 28, he was in New England for a four-car show. Montgomery cracked an aluminum cylinder head in the first round while running a losing 9.00/158 against Ray Cook's 8.91/157 in the "Stone, Woods & Cook" GT500. Rain delayed the race, so the cars could only make two runs. On George's next run, he knew he had to cut the lights close as his SOHC was running wounded. He did cut a good light, and his 9.02/158 held on to win over Pittman's better 8.94/157. A few days later (July 31), these same four cars ran at Kansas City. George's 8.73 beat Junior Thompson's 8.71. In his second race, he fouled away an 8.75 while opponent Pittman ran 8.69 to win. The next day, the four made a quick trip to Wichita International (August 1). Montgomery opened racing with an 8.89/161 that covered Thompson's 8.98/154. Pittman got out on him in the next race, and George had to drive around him with an 8.95/151 that beat Pittman's 8.98/146. George ran an 8.88/160.71 single in the last race of the event. These four were at National Trail on August 11 for their next stop. |

Notes: Here's a nice shot of Pat Dakin in G. L. Rupp's car losing a motor during Saturday afternoon qualifying at the 1974 Summernationals. This car was one of the nicest-looking dragsters of its day. Simple but effective graphics. Also, note those enclosed front wheel tubs. Although a neat idea while stationary, they were rudders at speed. If you had to correct and turn the wheel, they would fight you big time, ultimately sending you further out of shape. - Peter Kumble. (Note: The wheel pants having a rudder effect is generally accepted, but many notable top fuel drivers dispute this. Bp). | Ran 6.29 at Indy, 6.06 at Pomona, 6.40 at Gainesville, 6.26 at Englishtown, 6.33 at Indy. Dakin and partner G. L. Rupp had one of the stronger-running Donovan-powered cars at this time. | At Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, Pat qualified #6 with a 6.06/233.16. A first-round 6.07/219.51 beat Gaines Markley, and in round two, he advanced with an easy 6.57/191.48 when Don Garlits broke. Unfortunately, he lost to a strong 5.84 Low ET of the meet blast by Gary Beck in the semifinals. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March, and they qualified #12. In the first round, Dakin's 6.40 lost to Mike Wagoner's 6.39. Pat won the Easter Bunny Top Fuel Open at Bowling Green, Kentucky. On March 31, they were in Charlotte for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8-mile track. Dakin made it into the final by beating Tom Raley in the first round, when both ran 4.39, Pat at 161.87. In the semifinals, a 4.49 beat Marvin Schwartz, but in the final, he lost to Dale Funk. Dakin qualified #1 in the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 6.56/189.47. He then set Top Speed of the meet with a 225.55, but he lost before the finals. Indianapolis hosted the first NHRA Division 3 race, and a 6.29 qualified the team #3. Dakin fouled in the first round against Jim Bucher. They were a little off at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #14 in the field. But Dakin was up to the task, pulling a holeshot 6.40/204.54 to beat Billy Campbell's quicker 6.34/225 in the first round. He did it again in round two, running 6.37/226.70 to beat Bill Pryor's 6.34/192. Unfortunately, they hurt some parts and were unable to run in the semifinal and Pryor was reinstated. |
