Notes: Scott won the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a best of 8.90 at 150.25. Went through eliminations with a cracked block. He defeated Phil Nichols, Wayne Gapp, Lee Edwards, and finally Larry Huff in the final with an 8.99/150.25. Scott ran 8.94 at NHRA Englishtown 1975. He was runner-up to a Don Nicholson holeshot at IHRA Union Grove, 9.01/149.00 to Scott's 8.98/150.50. Runner up at Maryland International Raceway US Pro Stock Open 7/75. | Scott Shafiroff made a huge leap from running a strong Chevy Pro Stock Vega in '74 to switching to this Ford Mustang II for '75. After the season he had, it seemed like he made the right choice. Right off the bat, the car was a contender. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 9.00/151.51. An opening round 9.01/150 beat Kenny Hahn's Duster at 9.18/148, but he lost to Bill Jenkins in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he picked up even more on the pack running an 8.90 to qualify #5. But Shafiroff attempted to run an even better number to move up the chart, but the rear end tore out from the car while making his burnout. First alternate Bobby Yowell took his place in the field. After getting the car repaired, Scott ran the Mustang II, which was 50 lbs lighter than NHRA's weight, and ran an impressive 8.70. Scott was anxious to get back into competition. In April, he was at Cecil County's National Open where the car set both Low ET and Top Speed, but broke before eliminations. Things finally clicked his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. There, he won with a final round of 8.88/153.06. Shafiroff did a lot of match racing with the car and was very successful with it. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Scott's 9.02/151.26 qualified #5. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 9.11/147.29 lost to Warren Johnson's 9.18/148. Shortly after, he won over an eight-car field at Empire Dragway in New York. He set Low ET in the final with a 9.02 over Ronnie Manchester's 9.19. His biggest win of the year came at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran 8.98, 8.99, and 8.99 over a fouling Lee Edwards in the semifinals to reach the final against Larry Huff. Larry knew that Scott was running with a wounded motor, but he also saw that he was still running a tenth faster than his Dodge. So, Huff took a chance on the 'tree and fouled while Scott ran yet another 8.99 at 150 for his first IHRA national event win. He also made it two in a row in IHRA competition when he reached the final at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, but his final round 9.01 finished runner-up to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.98 in an all-Ford final. The car kept improving at the NHRA national events, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Shafiroff's 8.94/153.58 was now up to #3 on the qualifying list. His speed was also tops among the qualifiers. Scott looked strong in eliminations. An opening round 8.96/153.84 advanced when Sam Gianino fouled, and in round two, he beat Charlie Castaldo with an 8.95/154.63. He went up against Jenkins in the semifinals, and the car let him down, breaking on the pass and slowing to a 10.14/99.55 loss against Jenkins' 8.94/152. His next stop was at the US Pro Stock Open held at Budds Creek. Once again, the Mustang II was flying. He ran 8.96, 8.93, and 8.99 in the semifinals over a fouling Richie Zul. His final-round opponent was Roy Hill in his Duster. Roy had not been running quite as well as Scott had, hitting a best of 8.98 in eliminations, but a final round 8.97/151 beat Scott's 8.99/150.25 for the win. Notes: We also have a confirmed 8.59 in Unlimited trim. This Mustang II was new in 1975 and ran as a legal NHRA Pro Stock during that year. During 1976, Scott ran this car mostly in match race trim and as a legal C/A at NHRA national events. This photo from the 1976 NHRA Springnationals shows the car running as a C/A in Competition Eliminator.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Notes: Gene raced at the Irwindale Grand Premiere and hit 6.67/205.94. He was out for most of the first six months of 1975 after back surgery but returned in June 1975 to win at IHRA Bristol with a best of 6.36/223.88, defeating Denny Savage in the Chi-Town Hustler in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Denny Savage). | Gene was at Edmonton International on July 30 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. There were 24 cars present. All were to run three rounds of racing, with the winner being determined by wins. In Snow's first race, his 6.54/194 beat a badly out-of-shape Bill Spevacek. In his second race, he beat Ken McLean with a 6.39/215. His third race didn't go as planned as Raymond Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene's Vega. Shortly after, he was in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was a big 32-car show. Snow's 7.09/149 in the opening round of eliminations beat Bryan Raines' 7.14/194. But in the second round, his 6.53 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.38.

Notes: Gary Beck debuted Larry Minor's new Swindahl-built car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On the opening day of qualifying (Thursday), while everyone else was having trouble just trying to run a "five," Gary came out and ran 5.69. On Saturday, he picked it up to a 5.52/251.39, far ahead of #2 qualifier Jody Smart, who was in with a 5.77. Beck's had now qualified #1 for the fifth straight NHRA national event. He almost lost in the opening round, where the car broke a rear end and coasted through with a 19-second time, but his opponent, Richard Tharp, driving for Kilpatrick and Connell, fouled against him. Rain interfered, and the second round wasn't run until a week later. In that round, he ran 5.60 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.88. But in the semifinals, Beck faced Shirley Muldowney, and while she was streaking to a 5.68 to advance, Gary was filling the area with tire smoke as he overpowered the track. Everything went more according to plan at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, Beck qualified #1, this time with a 5.54/242.90. The spread to the #2 qualifier wasn't as large as at Pomona, as Shirley's 5.57/252 qualified #2. Beck opened with a 5.74/241.28 over Chris Karamesines' 5.91/241, and a strong 5.49/252.80 in round two took out Tharp's 5.63/252. In the semifinals, he faced his boss Minor, who, in round two, had opened some eyes with a 5.51. But Minor lost a blower belt while Gary ran a new NHRA record 5.44 at 252.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Connie Kalitta, and the "Bounty Hunter" went into hard tire shake and shut off while Beck ran another 5.49 at 251.39 for the victory. The team's next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 5.55/245.90 for the pole. He streaked to 5.42 (Low ET) at 252 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Minor. His 5.56/246 beat Kalitta's 5.73/241 in the semifinals. He went up against Tharp in the final, and Richard had lane choice as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.54. But it seemed like Beck's crew chief, Bernie Fedderly, could make the car run just about any number he wanted. Beck ran 5.53/249 in the final to pick up another victory over Tharp's 5.70/245.World Champ 1983. Ran 5.391/252.10 at Fremont (first in the 5.3s), then duplicated the feat at the World Finals. Gary went 5.448 National Record at Gainesville to provide early season thrills. Photo from 1983 Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Gary qualified at Pomona Winters at 5.976/242.58. We need to confirm that this is the car that ran at the Summers (247) and not the silver car. Beck started his '78 season by running a 6.26 to qualify #3 at the AHRA Winternationals. Against Jim Plummer, the car got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round. He then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the abovementioned times qualified Gary #7 in the field. A first-round 6.18/221 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.09/230. Great 5.855 ET at Columbus and 247.25 at Englishtown, but Gary dominated Ontario before breaking in the final. He ran amazing 5.763/250.00 numbers there in qualifying. We are listing these times here, but they may apply to the other 1978 entry for Gary. That shows blank times for now, but adjust when we get confirmation of which car ran which event. Gary became the 5th member of the NHRA 250 MPH club with that pass.

Notes: Beck had a rough season in '77. The season started at the PRO race at Beeline on January 14. Beck ran 6.28/204.54 in Friday's qualifying, but that is all the info we have from that race. He ran at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals on January 23. Gary qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.55. He improved to a first-round 6.38/203.60 to beat Arley Langlo, but in round two, his 6.52 lost to Ron Attebury's 6.44. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his best of 6.140/219.51 failed to qualify, and he failed to make the field at the Gatornationals as well at 6.320. He ran better at the Edgewater Division 3 race, qualifying #2 with a 6.09/205.46, but he failed to make it to the finals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.265/206.89, but in the first round, his 6.38/225.00 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.20/231. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #8 in the eight-car field with a 6.82/165.14. He picked up to a 6.47/223.89 in the first round to beat Attebury's 6.54/208. A 6.39/213.28 beat Ron Collins' Chevy-powered car in the semifinal. In the final, he met Jeb Allen, and despite running a 6.42/230.18, he lost to Jeb's 6.34/229. Gary experienced a violent engine explosion during qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals. The car caught fire, but Gary brought it to a safe stop. He was OK. He qualified #7 with a 6.078/215.82, but a first-round 6.32 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.22. He managed to get into another final round at the third Division 3 race at US 131, Martin, Mich. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/217.39 and beat Larry Brown in the first round with a 6.22/229.59. He blew another engine in the semifinals, but his 6.13/227.84 still beat Sid Seeley's 6.18/202. A new motor was installed for the final with Shirley Muldowney, and it performed, running 6.26/213.77. But this was Shirley's race, and she won with a 6.06/240 (Top Speed). One of the few bright spots in the year came at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals on July 3. Beck qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.44. In the first round, a 6.64 beat Doug Mead's 7.14. In round two, he lost to Frank Bradley, but Frank blew his engine while winning, and Beck got back in on the "break rule." So, in the final, he faced Jimmy Edwards. Edwards lost a blower belt, and Gary drove to a 6.62/197 victory. At Englishtown the following week (July 10), Beck had difficulty qualifying. He finally made the show on the "bump spot" with a 6.200/226.70 but lost to Lee Weller in the first round. Things seemed to be taking a turn at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals at the end of July. The team towed in and qualified #1 with a 6.12/236.22. He recorded a 5.98/243.90 in the first round to beat Longenecker's 6.53/185. In the semifinals, he set track records of 5.91/245.90 over Dick LaHaie's 6.33/198. The track ET record going into this race was a 6.01 by Don Garlits. Unfortunately, in the final, he slowed to a 6.15/244.56, losing to Bradley's 6.09/243. The next event on his calendar was the NHRA Grandnationals. There, he qualified #2 with a 6.070/236.22 and, in round one, beat Jeg Coughlin with a 6.14/224.43. In the semifinals (eight-car show), he lost to Dakin's 6.10/234 with a 6.17/233. Gary competed at the PHR Championships at US 131, lasting until the semifinals. He scored wins over Allen and Paul Romine with times of 5.97 and 5.96 before the engine came up ailing in the semis, and his 6.93 lost to eventual winner Johnny Abbott's 6.59. He got another victory on August 21 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set Low ET at 6.05 and, in the final, beat Allen for the title with a 6.24/227. Gary qualified #6 at Indy Nationals with a 5.962/236.84, but lost to James Warren in round one, with a shut off 7.33. He did not qualify at Seattle, running 6.12/229. Gary was said to have run a 5.99/199 motor-blowing run at the Ontario World Finals, but he does not appear on the NHRA qualifying sheets.

Notes: Gary debuted the "Thrush Muffler" car in May at the NHRA Division 6 race in Seattle. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.13, and he beat James Warren and Larry Kleinbrook in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Herm Petersen's 6.23/234 with an off-pace 7.71/122. He won the Division 1 race at Cayuga, and shortly after that, he won the third Division 3 race at Blaney. The car made its first national event showing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary was having a rough time making the field, as it took five attempts before his 6.23 qualified him #12 for the show. It was a little embarrassing when, in the first round, his 6.65 lost to Graham Light's 6.24. Light was driving Beck's old car. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beck qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.14/227.84 beat John Wiebe's 6.14/234. But in round two, his off-pace 6.66/161.29 was lost to Jeb Allen's 6.13/227. A week later (July 17), he was in Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships. He didn't reach the final but set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.99/238.09. At the second PDA race run at Fremont on July 24, he failed to reach the finals again, but he had a Top Speed at 243.93. He showed them at the last PDA race held at OCIR. He qualified #3 for the 32 car show with a 6.15 at only 212.76, but it was a long way back from Don Garlits, who qualified #1 with a 5.90/241. A first-round 6.17/218 beat Larry Dixon, and in round two, Gary's 6.16/233 took out Mike Reynolds. In round three, he really stepped it up, running 5.84/241.93 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.11/227. That set up a semifinal meeting with Garlits, who had run 5.82/245 in his third-round race. Beck cut a great light and made this race worth the cost of admission. His 5.89/236.22 beat "Big Daddy's" better 5.83/244. Beck went on to win by beating Ken Moitoza in a smoke-filled final. Gary's final round numbers were 6.43/226.70. He was in Canada the following week (August 8) for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another excellent outing for the team. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/233.76 behind Richard Tharp's 6.02/236 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was these two who would meet for the money. Beck started eliminations with a 6.38 over Frank Bradley, and in round two, his 6.14/241.93 beat Tom Kaiser. He got the odd-lot solo in the semifinals and ran 5.96/224.43. Tharp was also putting down some numbers. He had run 6.01, 5.98, and a semifinal 5.97. It was anyone's race in the final, but Beck made his fellow Canadians happy by setting a track record 5.81 at 243.24 (Top Speed) to get the win over Tharp's 6.08/199. Garlits got payback on Beck at the PHR Championships. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field, and Gary's 6.12 got him the #9 spot in the show. This meant that the two ran each other in the first round. Garlits ran 5.88/238 to put the "Thrushmobile's" 6.18/216.86 on the trailer. Beck then went to Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #1 with a track record 5.90 at 224.43 and in the final Mike Palmer broke so Gary's 5.99/215.82 picked up the win. Notes: Gary had a great year in '74. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12. The eight Top Fuel cars in the show were all members of the Cragar Five-Second Club. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. Beck faced off against Tommy Ivo in the first round, but he got out of shape, and his 7.58/128.20 lost to Ivo's 6.57/208. One week later (January 27), Gary was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.10/233.76. In the first round, he beat Dick LaHaie's 6.26/229 with a 6.15/231.95. In round two, another 6.15 at 230.76 beat Bruce Walker's 6.40/222. But in the semifinals, he tossed a blower belt on the line and watched as eventual winner Mike Wagoner singled into the final. Beck went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and strutted his stuff. A 6.02/240.00 qualified #4, and he improved to a first-round 5.96/239.36 while beating John Austin. His times kept getting quicker, as in round two, a 5.90/223.88 beat John Wiebe's 6.27/226. He uncorked Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with a 5.842/226.13 over Pat Dakin. In the final, he was up against Jerry Ruth, and Ruth's 6.21/226 lost to Beck's strong 5.91/243.24 (Top Speed). This showing really made an impression on the rest of the field, showing that Beck was tough to beat as the season wore on. In March, Beck qualified #3 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.11/198.66. He beat a crossed-up Gary Ormsby in the first round, and in round two, he got a single when Billy Tidwell failed to show. In the third round, he beat Larry Dixon's Chevy, but it was a costly win as he hurt the motor and could not come back and run Carl Olson in the semifinal. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Beck qualified #1 with a 6.01 (Low ET) at 235.60. A first-round 6.19/225.56 beat Paul Longenecker, and in round two, he lost an engine, but his 6.32/186.72 still beat Jim Hundley. With a new "bullet" installed, Gary got a break in the semifinal when Jim Murphy lost a transmission. Beck was ready for the final against Dave Settles in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he got a little too excited and fouled, handing Settles the win. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, Gary qualified on the pole, but he failed to make the finals of the eight-car show. He more than made up for it by winning the second NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga Dragway Park in Ontario, Canada. He beat a tire-smoking Jim Bucher in the first round, and a 6.43/227.84 beat Tony Ceraolo in the semifinal. Beck then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.38/231.95 that beat Sarge Arciero's 6.77/225 for the victory. Another win came at the fifth annual Northwest Open at Seattle. It was an eight-car show that had 21 cars trying to qualify. Gary qualified #2 with a 6.24/231.36. He picked up his pace to a first-round 5.95/236.84 (Top Speed) to beat Terry Capp's 6.43/231. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a track record 5.94/226.13 over Hank Johnson. In the final, he smoked to a 6.48/236.84 that beat Ernie Hall's troubled 7.37/221. It was another impressive win for Beck as he was the only car in the fives. Yet the wins kept coming. On June 9, he scored again at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #2 with a 6.03/242.58. A first-round 6.09/230.17 beat Flip Schofield, and in round two, a 6.03/236.22 beat Grant Stoms. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.98/245.23 over Wiebe. In the final, he ran low qualifier Olson. Beck roared to a 6.05/247.25 (Top Speed) for the win over Carl's 6.26. He went over to AHRA for its Springnationals at Spokane Raceway. Once again, he took the win. He got to Wiebe again in the semifinals with his 6.15/226.70, beating John's 6.47/196. In the final, he met Don Garlits. When these two raced, it was always worth watching. This time was no different, but Beck whipped the "old man" with a 6.00 (Low ET) at 232.55 over Don's 6.36/230. Gary got knocked back down to earth at the AHRA Grand American at Kansas City on July 7. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/211.76, and in the first round, he lost to the #8 qualifier Chris Karamesines when his 6.79 fell to Chris' 6.51. The following week (July 14), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was a little off here as Beck only qualified #13 with a 6.41/229.00. He picked up to 6.32/230.76 in the first round, over Arciero's close 6.35/238, but in round two, he fell off to 6.61/225.56 in a loss to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.39/227. At the third NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he qualified #4 in the eight-car field and lost to #8 qualifier Hank Endres' 6.37/217 in the first round, with a quicker 6.35/222.22. After a couple of bad weeks, people were quick to say that Beck had lost his combination, but all that went away when they went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Gary ran Sanair's first "five" when he qualified #1 with a 5.91 at 223.32. The second qualifier was Settles, way back at 6.27. In round one, Beck ran 6.20/219.51 to beat Stoms' 6.34/226. In the second round, he hurt his engine while running 5.94/242.58 while beating Jeb Allen's 6.35/218. Lady Luck stepped in, and it rained. This postponed the race until Monday, giving Beck and his crew time to install a new motor for the semifinals. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked his tires against him, and Gary advanced with a 6.28. He faced Settles in the final, and Dave must have been a little nervous seeing Beck's times. Settles fouled away a 6.39 while Beck grabbed the victory with a 6.34/217.91. After such a strong showing, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the PHR Championships. Although he was not alone as 39 cars had attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Almost as many (38) showed up at New York National for the PRO race on August 17. It was quite a bit easier to qualify as it was a 32 car field. Beck's 6.28/198.66 qualified #14. He improved to 6.07/217.80 in the first round, to beat Dale Thierer, but in the second round, he lost an engine, and his 6.58/169.49 fell to Jim Walther's 6.19/228. Notes: Low ET and Top Speed at the season-opening Winternationals at 5.937/244.56. Runner up to Garlits at IHRA Bristol in June 1975, 6.10/238.72 to 6.18/225.56. Won IHRA Dragway 42 over Garlits, 6.00 to 6.03, both at 245.23, in August 1975. | After a great '74 season, Gary was hoping for more in '75. The season started at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.42/229.00 lost to James Warren's 6.35/206. Gary then went to Pomona, where his 5.97/239.36 qualified #2. He set both Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.93/244.46 over Don Souter in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.49/212.26 loss to Rick Ramsey's 6.18/211. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet. His next stop was at Miami Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Beck 6.00 (Low ET) was two-tenths quicker than the second qualifier. But in the opening round of eliminations, he lost an engine and slowed to 6.41 in a loss to Austin Myers' 6.22. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary's 6.19 qualified #7, and in round one, he had more bad luck as he tossed a blower belt against Hank Endres. After a few weeks off, Beck went to Amarillo, Texas, for the IHRA World Nationals. Things didn't go so well, as he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He also didn't do too well when he faced off against Jerry Ruth for a best-of-three-match race at Mission BC. Gary lost all three of his races. Things went much more Beck's style at the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga. He won the event by beating Charlie Greer's 6.67/218 with a 6.36/205.94. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.25/231.95 that sent Grant Stoms' 6.46/227 packing for home. He had his closest race in the final, where his 6.47/204.08 beat Larry Bucher's 6.48/200. Early in June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.11/227.84 qualified #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.22/222.77 beat Frank Bradley's 6.21/222. But in round two, Beck broke on the line, letting eventual winner Marvin Graham solo into the semifinal with a 6.23. Set the national record at Ontario, only to have Garlits better it and pass Gary for the world championship. Ran 5.74 for the low qualifier at the 1975 World Finals.

Notes: Won the 1975 Winternationals. Won IHRA Bristol over Beck in June, 6.10/238.72 (IHRA speed record) to 6.18/225.56. On 7/01/75, ran first IHRA 5-second, 240 mph run at Union Grove with a 5.89/244.48 (need to confirm if this was SR21 or SR22). Runner-up to Beck at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 1975. Ran 6.03/245.23. Was that Swamp Rat 21 or 22? If 22, return this entry's speed to 244.56. Swamp Rat 21 was originally built for "Jungle Jim," but he changed his mind before it was finished. Garlits ran it until mid-year, then brought out 22. The easiest way to tell the difference in photos is that 21 had a black roll cage, and 22 was chromed. Pretty sure the Union Grove/IHRA record was set by 21. Werner Ch. Guillory. Photo: Big Daddy's 1975 Rear Engine Dragster - 'Chute Out at Phoenix.
