Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Notes: Dave qualified as a Top Fuel car at Spokane 91. (See duplicate entry in Top Fuel list). Lost in round one to Chris Karamesines, smoking the tires at half-track. Also, 6.155/229 at Calgary 91. B24 was a JP-1 with three-valve heads. Dave ran the altered at Calgary (see video). Chutes out on the run against to a 10.89 against Terry Capp in Korzan's Tempo, who filled in for a broken Louis Sweet. |

Notes: Don apparently did not race in 1982. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals and at NHRA Indy (#21 and #11 alternate, respectively, but times unavailable). He ran 5.92/241.93 at Fremont in April for the Fuel Wars event. Due to his Low ET, he earned a 10-second single in round one, but he had problems on the line in round two and lost to Doug Kerhulas. Don was the third alternate at NHRA Fremont at 5.920/238.09. He ran 5.912/237.46 at the World Finals for the third alternate position. |

Notes: Don was the tenth alternate at Pomona (times not reported). He was the fourth alternate at Gainesville (times not reported). Don was the fourth alternate at Baton Rouge with a 6.50 (speed not reported). He was the third alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.300 best (speed not reported). Shortly after, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division Two race. Only six cars showed, and his 6.41 qualified #3. He beat John Holcombe in the first round before fouling against Lee Weller in the semi-final. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. Unfortunately, his off-pace 7.75 in the opening round lost to Charlie Greer's 6.30. Don was the second alternate at Indy with a 6.178/227.84. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Where did Don run 6.02/238? | A very interesting idea, but probably the wrong engine choice. Iron-headed Donovan didn't really provide the best power-to-weight ratio for the project? Also could have benefited from today's lighter composite materials (just like Peterson and Fitz streamliner), which generated a lot of publicity tho! - Tim Simplot | Did Don run the rear wheel pods in 1976 or 1977? Or both? BP |

Notes: Unique body design hid the slicks in these tapered pods, but Don returned to a conventional setup. Don qualified #15 at Pomona at 6.030/235.60. He lost to Paul Longenecker on a holeshot in round one, 6.085/237.46 to Don's 6.061/234.37. His next event was Englishtown, where he finished as the first alternate at 6.224/223.32. Don qualified #7 at the Sanair Grandnationals at 6.377/220.58. He lost to Grant Stoms in round one, 6.17/218 to 6.41/211.76. That was Don's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Don attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winters but was the #32 alternate (out of 50 alternates!) at 6.57/209.30. He made one of his best passes ever in attempting to qualify at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. His 6.29/222.22 easily made the field, but it cost him a motor on the run, and he could not compete. Don Ewald took his place in the show. At the NHRA Finals, he was the 18th alternate (times not reported). |
