Notes: 1969 NHRA Winternationals, Springnationals, NHRA Nationals entry, Class Winner at Springnationals at Dallas. 7.54 at Irwindale, 202.70 at OCIR. Borsch won over an eight-car field at OCIR on March 15. He qualified #4 with an 8.17/162.45 and then ran 8.45/187.10 over Bill Thurmond and 8.36/165.13 in the semifinals over Frank Harris' 8.63/177. He faced Chuck Horchar in the final, and an 8.44/184.80 got him the victory over Chuck's off-pace 9.40/144. On May 17, he was at Lions for another eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a track record 7.63 at 200.89 (Top Speed). In round one, his 7.75/198.67 beat Leon Fitzgerald's 8.13/196, and in the semifinals, another 7.75 at 178.21 advanced when Tom Ferraro shut off. He faced Horchar in the final, and Borsch got out of shape and slowed to 9.09 for the runner-up spot to Chuck's 8.41/176. Willie was runner-up to Sush Matsubara at an eight-car show at Irwindale on July 19. He beat the "Magnificent 7" in the first round with a 7.74/196.92, while in the semifinal, his 7.84/193.12 beat an out-of-shape George Hutchinson. On September 21, Borsch was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He lost to Bob Hankins' 7.52/193 in the first round, with an 8.07/186.32, but he got back in on the "break rule" when Butch Thurmond broke while winning his first-round race. In the semifinals, an 8.29/173.74 beat a sleepy 7.97/180 by Chuck Burch in the "Rat Trap." This put Willie into the final, where he was to rerun Hankins. Bob went into a wheelstand and shut off while the "Winged Express" ran 7.92/189.06 for the victory. A week later (September 27), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. This time, he lost to Matsubara's 7.57/193 in the semifinals with a strong 7.64/204.98. Willie won the Fuel Altered eliminator at Irwindale's Grand Prix on October 4. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.54/199.54. On November 30, he was at Fremont for a sixteen-car "Combo" meet. Top Gas Dragsters, Junior Fuelers, and AA/FAs all ran together. Willie qualified #3 with a 7.67, and he improved to 7.53/195.22 in the first round over John Shoemaker. In the second round, he was to face Jim Brandy in the "Giant Killer," but as Borsch was pulling to the line, something in his steering let go, and he could not run. A week later (December 7), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car Fuel Altered race. He qualified #7 with a 7.82, but he shut off on the line in the first round with no oil pressure. |

Notes: This was the fourth altered built by the Burkholders. The chassis was 1.5" chrome moly by owner Harry. The body was a '23 T touring one off, created by combining front 2/3rds and rear 2/3rds of a '23 T roadster. Paint by Pete. This was when they were still running the Oldsmobile engine in 1968. Changed to Chrysler Hemi in 1969. |

Notes: Bob won over an eight-car field at OCIR on August 30. He ran 7.87 at 180.36 to beat Ed Moore in the first round, while in the semifinals, he picked up slightly to a 7.82/193.13 (Top Speed) to beat Dennis Geiger's 7.88/177 in the "Magnificent 7." In the final, a 7.80/191.08 beat Danny Collins 8.74/173. Every one of his runs was a career-best (to this point). On September 21, Bob's "Blue Blazer" was really running strong at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 7.72/184.80, and in the first round, he set Low ET with a 7.52 at 193.13 to beat Willie Borsch. In the semifinals, his 7.71/168.85 dropped Leon Fitzgerald in the "Pure Heaven" car, and that set up a final-round meeting with a reinstated Borsch, back in "break rule." This time, Willie won with a 7.92/189 when Hankins shut off due to a wheelstand. The following week (September 27), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Mike Sullivan. |

Notes: Charlie's Charger was in the northwest for most of its existence 'cuz Charlie was in the Army at Fort Lewis. It ran constantly and won nearly every race all of 1971 except the NHRA WCS events - Jerry Ruth won all five. The Charger set the first Funny Car speed record over 220 that year, a 222.22 at Mission, B.C. Hard to forget that number. - Phil Elliott | Charlie Allen claimed both ends of the Funny Car record at 6.82/222.22. - NHRA | Ran 6.82 at Fremont 6/71 (National Record) |At the rain-delayed Fremont Northern Nationals, Allen qualified with a 7.71/142.85. But he was unable to make it back for the race's rain date. On May 1st, he was at Seattle for an eight-car show, but he broke a rear end in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Deer Park for the NHRA Division 6 race. Eventual winner Jerry Ruth's 7.11/204 beat his 7.17/196.92. He made it into the final at the next NHRA Division 6 race held at Bremerton on May 23. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.03. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, he soloed. In the semifinals, his 7.57/207.84 beat Glen Foster. He went up against Ruth in the final, and his car broke at half-track while Ruth bagged another one with a 6.78. Charlie won the KJR Drag Festival in Seattle on June 20. He beat Jerry Ruth in the final with a 6.81/221. |

Notes: On January 23, Ray was runner-up at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He beat Gary Burgin's 6.94/210 in the first round, with a 6.85/205.94. In the semifinals, a 6.85/209.79 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car. An off-pace 7.28 in the final lost to Snow's track record 6.57. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The "Hawaiian" got him again in the first round, at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 25. On May 6, he was at OCIR's Big Four Championships. Bob Pickett fouled against him in the first round, but in round two, his engine exploded while running a winning 7.22/184.80. He won his race, but received minor burns and was unable to return for round three (32-car show). He was at Lions a couple of weeks later for the second annual Funny Car Festival. An opening round 7.15/192.71 beat Mert Littlefield, but he lost soon after. Alley was back at OCIR for the Hang Ten meet where his 7.05/189.47 in the first round, lost to Joe Lee's 6.95/209. |

Notes: Larry was at Irwindale for its New Year's Day Race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Arnold's 7.06/205.94 qualified #3. A first-round 7.15/180.72 advanced, but he lost in round two. His next stop was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American of '71. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify, and Larry's 7.08 just made the show. In the opening round, his 7.12 beat Don Schumacher's off-pace 7.35, but the "Kingfish" came up to the line ailing in round two and lost to Stan Shiroma. Irwindale held a four-car, pre-Winternationals race. Larry qualified #2 with a 7.05/211.76 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.21/178.21 beat Randy Walls, who lost an engine. In the final, he went up against Jake Johnston. The two had a great race, with both running 7.15 (Arnold at 209.78), but the "Kingfish" got the win light. Unfortunately, he didn't run nearly that well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, as he failed to qualify. He qualified #4 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.84/217.39, but opponent Wayne Mahaffey failed to fire in the opening round. So, Larry went on a single that saw his motor blow, and he coasted through with a 9.32 to advance. Arnold was unable to repair for his second-round race against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster." Larry won the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario in November with best times of 6.84/212. |

Notes: The Doug's Headers team was true to the Chevy engine for much longer than most. Most of the "loyal" Chevy campaigners had switched to Hemi's long before he would. "Jungle Jim" Liberman switched before the '69 season ended, and both Bruce Larson and Kelly Chadwick jumped into Pro Stock racing rather than install a Hemi in their cars. Bourgeois was at Atlanta in June for a sixteen-car show, but an off-pace 7.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.78. Dick had a really good outing for a Chevy-powered car on September 16 at the New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and Dick advanced past the first round over a blower popping Kosty Ivanof. In round two, he ran a 6.72/204 to beat Fred Goeske, who broke at half-track. In the third round, a 7.20/184 beat Bob Mayer. Bourgeois then lost to Lew Arrington, but the "Brutus" Mustang went up in flames at the 1,000 feet mark. Lew could not return for the final, so Dick was reinstated and ran the Tom Prock driven "Custom Body" Challenger in the final. Prock took the win with a 6.51/201 over the Vega's 7.16/179. By late '73, it was pretty much impossible to compete against the Hemis with the Chevy motor. But the "Doug's Headers" car stayed with the "Rat" motor. |

Notes: Stan Bowman really ran well in '76. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 6.539/223.88 but smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Johnny White, 6.84/200 to 11.65/73. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, where his final round 6.69/191.89 beat George Johnson, who smoked the tires to a 7.78/201 runner-up effort. Earlier, he set Low ET with his 6.60/191.89 run in the semifinals. Stan qualified #1 at the Beech Bend Divisional race with a 6.30 before beating John Austin's 6.51/199 in the final with a 6.357/205.47. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy with a 6.269/223.32, but in the first round, a 6.448/205.94 lost to Tom Prock's 6.24/223. Still, just qualifying at the US Nationals was a big deal as 40 cars attempted to make the show. |

Notes: AKA Henchman. This was originally the Dekker-Muelling Camaro. It also ran as BB/A and AAFA. Leo Rancours ran the car in the 1970s or 80s. The car still exists! Kevin Stevens runs it. Jack ran at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships on July 20 at Continental Divide Raceway. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.89/170.77 lost to Bryan Teal's 8.49/160.42. The listed times are from Thunder Road, July 1969. Was this a hemi or a Chevy? |

Notes: Cliff got a new Mustang from Lee Austin in early 1972. In his first race at Riverside Raceway in Nashville, TN, he won the event, setting low ET at 7.15/203. - National Dragster 4/14/72 | The car used a Halibrand quick-change rear end with 4.52 gears. He switched to a high-gear-only setup from the Lenco 2-speed he had used previously. He still used a Lenco reverser. The body was from Fiberglass Ltd. The Stock Stroke Hemi used MT rods and 5.5:1 pistons. A Howard's cam was also used. Up top, the GMC 6/71 was reworked by Gary Dyer and was overdriven by 33%. Cragar supplied the intake manifold and blower drive. The engine was fed by Enderle injection. Mike Beard served as the crew chief. According to features from various car magazines at the time, Brown was said to have run some 6.8s at 210 with the car. Cliff also ran 7.22 at Miami. |

Notes: Brown started his season at Miami-Hollywood in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Smith, who was driving the "Fireball Vega." Smith reset the track ET record while beating Brown in their opening round race. Cliff was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an easy field to make, as his 10.13 qualified him for #13. In the first round, he lost a supercharger and the race to Jim Paoli. In June, he was in Atlanta for the Funny Car Invitational. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Cliff ran a 7.08 to beat Shirl Greer's 7.22 in Billy Holt's new Vega. In round two, he lost another supercharger but still won when Frank Oglesby broke a reverser. The race was then halted by rain. Cliff used a stock stroke hemi to achieve consistent success. |

Notes: In late March, Fritz was at Victoria Dragway in Texas for a best of three match race against Cecil Lankford, driving the "Brand X" Mustang. In their first race, Callier reset the track record to 7.06 at 206.16 while beating Lankford's 7.37/189. Fritz then set both ends of the track record in the second race with a 6.71/217.90. Cecil smoked the tires to 7.62/200 in his loss. The final race saw Fritz show that his times were not a fluke as he won three straight with a final 6.75/216.34 over Lankford's 7.02/211. The track records going into this match were 7.17/208.80, both held by Lankford. |
