Notes: The AWB '65 match bash Mustang (and other rides) were better known, but this car existed, ran injected, also ran blown. Not a round-tube chassis car. May have been an earlier car with an updated body. - DD

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and the car was powered by a 426 Chrysler Hemi on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Stats Courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Notes: 398" early hemi, Hilborn bug catcher, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. The car was featured in 3/68 SS&DI magazine. - RT | Confirmed 7.32/199.10 at Fremont in 11/69. | The 202 mph run was at Gary, which was suspect, unfortunately. He did run 200 at New England Dragway in 1969. Fiberglass Trends 68 body with a 69 upgrade. 1958 392 Chrysler Hemi. - Dennis Doubleday | Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 69 at 7.32/200.00. |Arrington started his '69 season by qualifying with a 7.98 at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. But by qualifying ninth, he had to face low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. Don laid down a 7.59/195 to trailer Lew's 8.06/195.56. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9, Lew qualified eighth with a 7.75/189.46. That alone was impressive since 35 cars were going for the eight spots available. He failed to make it to the finals. Lew beat the super-tough Tom Grove at Aquasco on March 30. It was a best of three match, and in the first race, Arrington got out of shape and lost to the Mustang with a 9.01 at a flying 184.42. Grove sawed an engine in half in the second race, and Lew won with an 8.35/185.18. He soloed for the match race win when Tom couldn't return for the third race. On May 25, he had a match race against Charlie Allen at Connecticut. In the first race, Allen's 7.67/184 beat his 8.19/182.18. In the second race, Arrington's 7.99/188.92 beat Allen's 8.30/164, and the last race saw Charlie win the match with a 7.73/188 beating Brutus at 8.30/187.88. On May 30, Lew was at Budds Creek for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. It was a six-car field, but it had some excellent cars in the show. Lew beat the "Frantic Ford" in the first round, with an 8.00/187.10. In the semifinals, his 8.01/183.66 beat Allen's 8.14/163. In the final, he ran Bruce Larson's USA-1 Camaro. Larson had earlier set a new track record 7.33, so things weren't looking too good for "Brutus." Sure enough, in the final, Lew had problems and shut off to a 9.16/157.89 while Larson got the victory with a 7.84/187. New England held its Funny Car Championships on June 8, and Lew set a track record 7.54/196.92 in the first round. He got out-of-shape in the second round and lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.85/172. Also, in June at New York National for an eight-car show, Lew set a 199.54 track record while beating Ron Rivero (7.80/180) in the first round. In the semifinal, a 7.68/196.50 beat Frank Oglesby's 7.78/188, but in the final, he lost to Tony Wahlay. Lew competed at the President's Gold Cup Championships at Aquasco on June 22, winning his first-round race with an 8.07/187.88 over Tom McEwen's tire-smoking 8.71/152. In the semifinal, Jim Liberman's 7.74/190 was too much for Lew's 7.86/189.46. Malcolm Durham was paired up against him at a match race at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28, and although Malcolm won the first race, Lew won the next two when Durham broke and couldn't repair. On July 3, Arrington went to Edgewater for an eight-car show, and a 7.90 in the first round, beat an out-of-shape Dick Harrell. In the semis, Pat Minick's 7.47/191 sent Brutus to the trailer. The next day (July 4), he went to Suffolk for another eight-car show. There he ran a first-round 7.67/191.08 over Pat Minick's ailing 10.33 and a semifinal (Low ET) 7.55/193.54 beat Liberman's 7.62/191. But in the final, Dean LaPole, driving Larry Christopherson's Nova, beat him with a 7.97/193. Atco held its fourth annual Funny Car Championships on July 9, and a first-round 7.48 track record by Ed Schartman beat Arrington's 7.81. Durham's 7.59/195 beat Lew's 7.73/194.38 in the first round, on July 16 at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race, but Malcolm blew his engine, and with the break rule in effect, Brutus got back in for round two, where his 7.60/198.66 (Top Speed) beat Tom McEwen's 7.91/184. Unfortunately, Arrington fouled against Dick Harrell in the semifinal. He got himself a big win on July 20 at the Cars Magazine meet. He ran a best of 7.50/193.96 before beating Clare Sanders' 7.77 in the final with a 7.55. Lew lost early at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Minick set Low ET with a 7.33/201 over Lew's 7.48/196.93 in the first round. Lew ran at the AHRA Nationals on August 17 in New York but failed to get to the late rounds. He raced at Suffolk on September 7 and won his first race with a 7.56/191.08 over Ron Rivero's 7.60. In the second round, an 8.06/129 won when Henry Garcia lost a trans. In his third race, he fouled away Low ET at 7.45/196.50. He then went to Connecticut the following day (September 8) for a 14 car show. A first-round 7.63/193.12 beat Phil Castronovo's 8.33/162. He soloed in the second round with a 7.62/192.30 when Durham lost fire and a Low ET 7.56/191.08 beat Clare Sanders' 7.77/189.46, putting Lew in the final against Rivero. In the final, a 7.72/188.28 beat Ron's 7.93/181 for the title. He faced Liberman at Maple Grove for a best two-out-of-three Match race on September 13 and beat Jim two straight with runs of 7.61/188.66 and 7.53/191.48 over JJ's best of 7.67/186.32. On September 21 at New England's third annual Funny Car Championships, Lew beat Bill Lawton with a 7.32/195, to Lawton's close 7.32/200, followed by a 7.38/199.50 over Paul Stefansky's 7.88/181. In the final, he beat Liberman again with a 7.44/199.50 to JJ's off pace 8.70. He failed to make it into the final on November 2 at the Sears Point North/South Championships, but he did run a 7.89/194.60 over Kelly Chadwick in one of his races. On November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, he qualified second with a 7.55 on the Wacky Funny Car team (cars that had motors that were not manufactured by the same manufacturer as the body). He won two of his three races running 7.61/196.93 over Mike Burkhart's 7.99/197 and 7.57/196.93 (again) over alternate Pete Bagnard. He lost to Gene Snow's 7.29/208 in the third round when he smoked the tires and slowed to an 8.09. Lew set both ends of Maple Grove track records at 7.39/196. - Ron Howard

Notes: Lew got a new car after running the same Firebird in '68, '69, and '70. He also changed engines from the early 392 Hemi to the newer 426 style Hemi. He must have taken a liking to the new Mustang as not only did the sleek body cloak his chassis, but he also went through the added effort of welding up a pair of valve covers to look like he was running a Boss 429 Ford engine. In April, Lew faced Jim Liberman in a best-of-three match race at Connecticut. Liberman won the first race with a 7.19/197 over Lew's 7.32/195.65. In the second race, Liberman went into a wheelstand and shut off, giving "Brutus" the win at 7.17/196.50. Jim could not run in the final race due to a blown transmission, so Arrington soloed for the match race win. He set a 7.02 track record at 203.61 on the final pass. Lew was at the Super Stock Nationals on May 9 at York US 30, but a first-round 7.35/208.33 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.88/199. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet. Also, 6.77 at New England Dragway on October 11, 1971. He crossed the country to race at Fremont in late October 1971 (6.75). Lew's best 1971 times are courtesy of Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: The famed "Nitro Molecule" paint job is shown. The paint faded as the year went along to a peach color. Early in the season, the "Brutus" Mustang suffered a lot of breakage. The car was going through rear ends, transmissions, and engines. But he got it together at Englishtown in July for its FC Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and he won it with times of 6.78/213.27, 6.63/214.28, and 6.83/211.76 in the final to beat Roy Harris' 6.91/204.54 in the "Frantic Ford." Lew was at Englishtown for a Funny Car show in August, where he lost to eventual winner Larry Fullerton's 6.69/216 in the first round, with a 6.84/210.76. Lew faced his former driver, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, at Maple Grove for a best of three match in September. Arrington won the match two straight with times of 6.79 and 6.88/208.80. Best 1972 times are thanks to Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: Also 6.50s at 220 at Epping Funny Car Nationals in 1973 (but he burned it up in the final and had to borrow Ken Riehle’s Hell Fire rear-engine car to complete dates). | Best 1973 times thanks to Dennis Doubleday. Based in Concordville, PA, car lost in fire at NED October 73. | Arrington was at Connecticut in June for a twelve car show. He reached the finals by running 6.92/202 over an out of shape Sam Miller and in the second round beat Jimmy King with a 7.08/203.61. He faced his old driver, “Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final where his 7.00/205.01 finished runner-up to Liberman's 6.59/213. Lew was at Englishtown on July 4th for an eight-car show. He ran 6.88/218.44 over Tom Prock and 6.68/218.97 in the semifinals over Pat Foster's quicker 6.67/223 in Barry Setzer's Vega. This set up a final round meeting with Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car. Lew ran an easy 7.14/216.34 to get the victory when Clare had a blower pulley break. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals. He was at Maple Grove on July 25 for the All-American Funny Car race. A first-round 6.80/221.76 beat Wayne Oxner, but he lost in the second round. Arrington ran well at the Super Stock Magazine Championships. He had run times of 6.73 and 6.74 on his way to a final round meeting with Prock. There his 6.91/210 finished runner-up to Tom's 6.71/218. Another runner-up finish came at Cecil County's Maryland State Funny Car Championships. Lew beat Joe Jacono in the opening round with a 6.69/213.77 and a semifinal 6.79/212.76 trailered "Jungle Jim's" 6.91. Once again, he faced Prock in the final and again the results were the same. His 6.65/214.79 finished second to Prock's 6.63/217. His runner-up finishes continued at Connecticut's East Coast Mini-Nationals. A first-round 6.84/211.26 beat Tom Crevasse in the "Fireball Vega" and a semifinal 6.79/209.30 took out Pee Wee Wallace's 6.86/212. This time he faced Jimmy King in the final and after doing his burnout, the reverser failed, giving King a solo for the money. It was another final round showing at his next stop, an eight-car show at Atco. Lew ran 6.94/216.31 over Wallace and 6.88/217.91 over Dick Bourgeois to reach the final. There he raced Crevasse. Arrington staged his car and the 'tree activated before Tom had even staged the "Fireball Vega." Lew made an on and off the throttle run while Tom was still at the line wondering what had happened. They agreed to split the purse.

Notes: As far as I know, this car always ran a 427 Chevrolet, not a Hemi. Confusing owner-driver situation on this one. I have Pete Bagnard and Engle as owners. Drivers 'listed' included Pete Bagnard, Bill Bradford, Bob Smith, Jim McEvoy and Jess Tyree. Time entered here credited to Pete Bagnard, but no way of actually knowing who was driving. In a for sale ad late in 1969, car was credited with running 7.80s at 185/190 mph. This ad was run prior to a race at Irwindale late in 1969. At this race, the car blew the blower and the roof off, ran a good 7.57/191.08, Bagnard listed as driver. - Dennis Doubleday

Notes: An ad for a funny car meet at OCIR, late in 1969, credits the car with a 191 mph run. This car started out as Dick Tutino's "Alan Green Chevrolet" Camaro in 1967. After he rolled it at Arlington, Bedell bought the car, ran it in 1968 through early 1970. The car was then sold to Gary Matranga, who ran the car as the "Day Go express" through most of '70 into early '71. Believe this is the car that Bob Sanguino (another No-Cal racer) ran in '71-'72 as a Bracket car. - DD

Notes: Fred Goeske owned through 1969 then sold to Bush & Brown. We need to confirm that Brown did not drive Neil 1970. (Goeske had both this car and his Rodrunner at Indy 1969) per Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: Car ran 67 through 70. An ad in Drag News late in 1969 for a race at OCIR gives a best ET for this car at 7.61 at 191 mph. I would guess these are 1969 stats. - DD Confirmed 8.02 Boise

Notes: Late hemi, TorqueFlite combo. This car, with an early hemi, was originally built and raced by Brad Anderson of Colorado. A feature on the Dart in the 11/70 issue of Rodder & Super/Stock said Bush sometimes ran fuel so was able to race as a Gasser or fuel funny car. - RT | Yes, this is true. Here's a shot of him racing Kalitta at Sears Point. These stat upgrades are from that race, late in 1969. - DD
