Back when I was in grade school, Santa Claus showed up at the Christmas party we had every year...he was a riot...loud, crazy, happy-go-lucky and hilarious...he grabbed the bell from Sister Mary Brutus and rang the dang thing till the whole school was in stitches...including the nuns...he danced and sang and told jokes and cut up with everybody, and he handed out bags of candy to every one of us...I knew Santa Claus was real, because when I'd go up to him and he'd give me the candy, he'd say what my Dad always said to me: "What's YOUR name, Young Fella?" I loved Santa Claus...he belonged to US...but when I was in the 2nd grade, my buddies told me: "That's your Dad." It was a moment I'll never forget...I was absolutely shocked...my Dad NEVER acted like that. He was quiet, reserved, polite and shy. This Santa Claus was a MANIAC...it's the only time I ever saw my Dad in a "role"...but as it turned out, when I grew up, it was ME who became Santa Claus...the line I used earlier was one my brother-in-law laid on me when I got my first divorce. He said, "So the divorce is final?" I said yep, it went through today...he said "Did they put in the Sanity Clause?" I said uh, no...he said "Well, I hate to tell you this, but there really ain't no Sanity Clause!" It's a Marx Brothers line...but no, I'll believe in Sanity Clause if you guys say he's real. No problem...sorry if I caused a controversy with that post! Don't worry! Santa's coming! WC1

I've played the Jolly One for 25 years now. Lots of fun. I played him for my mom's nursery school class in Ohio and for my kids' elementary school for every year they went there. I even played Santa at the McDonalds at the major Norfolk, Virginia, mall for three weeks one year when I was in the Navy. That was fun (and lucrative, at 50 bucks a day -- a lot of extra walking around money for me as a bucks down sailor). But I also understand how Clark Kent feels. One minute you've got folks sitting on your lap, hugging and kissing you. A half hour later, they look through you as if you don't exist... strange... bp
