Do you remember... first time your name appeared in Nat Drag

Postby Wild Driver » Tue Dec 19, 2006 11:19 pm

Tell you what I 'll never forget it. I was reading the Dec. 15th issue last night and happened upon the results for SGMP Nostalgia event that Marvin T. Smith submitted. My poor car couldn't hardly do a burnout but we still got it running for the cacklefest with what we know now was a badly cracked head. Well as I was reading I couldn't believe it I just couldn't believe it. It cetainly wasn't because of anything big I did but somehow it feels like you're in an exclusive club, I guess. To be named in the same article with Big Daddy lil ole me well that's beyond anything I ever dreamed of. This nostalgia racing continues to throw occurences at me that I never would have thought would mean that much to me. I never thought about how cool it would be to be in a cacklefest. I never thought how cool it would be to see your name or a photo of your car in Nat Drag. I've never thought of how cool it would be to participate in a national event with a team. But when I was put in the position to do all this stuff it's just mind - blowing how cool it is. I think I'm starting to realize where the egos come from and why some guys keep coming back for more. It's not only the racing it's also bragging rights and pomp - show everyone who the man to beat is on the track and in print. I'll never get a big head though! LOL - Eric

Congrats, Eric. I do remember that it was really a thrill to see my first story published in Drag Review, and then get several mentions over the years in various publications. Everybody does like to see their efforts noticed and I think it's great that you are getting some ink. bp

Congrats Eric! Yup, I do remember my firsts too. Got ink in the old days of the early 70's in Drag Scoop a lot, then finally ink in Dragster and Magazines. It's all good and it does bump the o'ego too. 8)

Racing is very cool, but a big part of it is the friends and stories you make along the way too. :D

Congratulations on National Dragster ink, Eric! In the last couple of years, I've seen some cars show up in there that I did the graphics on, and it was a thrill to see. We (Draglist) got a write-up in Bob Frey's column that talked up the "Blues For Becky" benefit that we did in February 2004 here in Houston. We later met Bob Frey at HRP and he couldn't have been more of a gentleman and a good-natured people guy. He's one of NHRA's greatest assets and a wonderfully talented man. You did good, and you got good press for your efforts. There is justice! Cheers, WC1

I remember my first mention in ND. It was in 1982 when I was running Division 3 in Super Comp with my Pinto F/C.
My name was in there 3 times, once in the article, then in the results, and then in the back where they keep the points standings. It was misspelled all three times , plus, to add insult to injury, in the write up they said I was driving a Pinto doorslammer.

It was a real treat when I would send in articles about the MFCA and see them in print. Not bad for a guy who BARELY passed high school English. LOL

Oh, yeah! Ten l-o-n-g years of coming this  close before a bracket win at Kent, Wa.

There is ONE notable reference to anyone putting together a statistical periodical for any sustainable length of time in "High Performance-The Culture and Technology of Drag Racing" by Smithsonion curator Dr. Robert Post. Wonder how BP felt to be credited in what Garlits calls "the Bible" of our sport? Anybody seen him, lately? :P

Actually, draglist and I are in there TWO times, thank you very much! (and then we are edited in the paperback edition to mention that the draglist had moved online). It felt great. Bob Post was one of the things that really brought the legitimacy of what I did to Denise. Somewhere between the High Performance book, and the two Smithsonian Institution black tie induction ceremonies we attended (for Garlits' dragster and Larson's flopper), Denise figured that my involvement in this drag racing was more than just a reason to fly places and hang out with pals! (Of course, she was mostly wrong about that!) Thanks, RacersforCoffee, I had forgotten about that honor when I responded to this post. bp
