Don Ross here I build hot rods and recreate and restore old dragsters in Dallas TX.
I'm new here on this board, but not new to dragracing. In 1963 my brother and I built an alterd Fiat coupe, we ran it only one time at green Vally Raceway at the AHRA Nationals. We put it in comp coupe class and ran 30% nitro ,made it to semi finals. My brother was more interested in circle track racing so the car was sold to sombody up north and never seen again. I had a 65 lb. flywheel left out of the deal and joined up with Tony Fite and Skipper Hearder on a Modified roadster. My flywheel made the roadster stop bogging down off the line and we ran alky and high gear. The switch from gas to alky jumped us from 11 seconds to 9.5s.
We later got a 120" Jim davis chassis that was the last one he built in Dallas. This would be our only car for the years we ran AA/FD. However we modified it as the years went on. We ran as Hearter, Fite & Ross, then added partners,Tom Helms, Bill Ross( my other brother) and Mike Leverett
Only Tony Fite , My brother Bill and I are still living.
We front halved the chassis in winter of 65 and made a full new body. We then called our selfs The U.S. Kids. In or around 66 I wanted all of us to join up with Tony Casarez on a new car he compleated at my Family Metal shop The former Dallas Metal Smiths. They didn't want to join with Tony C. and we split. Tony Casarez and I ran the new car with Gary Bailey driving. We were one of the better cars in Texas and Louisana. My wife was ill so I dropped out of racing. I continued working at the family business till 1998. Then I opened Don Ross Fabricating to build Hot Rods. Then along came the reunions and the rest is history. I first recreated the Scorpion 1 dragster of Bobby Langley. Next I built Scorpion 2 for Don Garlits and the Museum in Florida. The last car I just finished in time for Columbus NHRR 2007 was Scorpion 5. I still have several projects on going and an other old dragster lined up in a few months.
Thanks Don Ross
