Born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Both my folks were from Iowa, but they had moved up there so dad could take a job in a paper mill after college. He was a chemist. A month and a day after I was born, Pearl Harbor was attacked and the folks moved to Des Moines soon after where my dad finished out the war making 50 cal. machine gun ammunition.
I went all the way through school in Des Moines, but after marriage and 2 kids moved to this little town of Carlisle where we still live. We have been in this house 31 years. I started in a big printing press room 3 days out of high school and retired 6 years ago after working 40 years, 9 months and 1 week printing magazines.
I crewed a C/MP Nova in 69/70, then 82/87 on Vern Moats TA/FC. Started taking racing photos in 82 and am still at it.
Going to the California Hot Rod Reunion and then Bonneville for the 4th time in October.

Great post, Al! Great story, man. I hope when you go to Bonneville that your camera is clicking every 15 seconds...that place to me is where it all began...one of my life's goals is to make a pilgrimage there. I believe I might find Kunta Bockelman out there on the salt flats...it's fantastic that you're going. Be sure to give us a full report and pics, please! Cheers, WC1

Bonneville the holy ground of speed, someday , someday .... uh oh you two are going to be at SC? oh boy better get my mask ready .. ( I have to go as Bill races it every year ) we usually pit down past the timing booth along the return road.
