What Track ??

Postby 223rd&Alameda » Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:37 pm

If you could go back in time, let's say any strip before 1985, what closed track would you have liked to gone to. For me it would have been either U.S. 30 in Indiana or York in Pa.

What's yours??

Being from the Chicago area, I always wanted to go to California tracks or Indy. I grew up at 30 and Oswego.

Tough question, but I'll say Dallas International Motor Speedway. This track was state of the art for 1969 and the crowds and performance was legendary, and for it to die so quickly that the history of DIMS seems folklore(ish)!

R-Coffee, great post brother! As one who was there in that era at that track was a amazing time to say the least. Top Fuel was so outrageously competitve then. It was magic back then. I keep harpin' on the fact that that track at 223rd & Alameda was the absolute hotbed of fuel racing. I would guess that Mr. Kepner may agree with that, LOL.

223rd & Alameda " The nations most competitive weekly Top Fuel track................. ever." There is no arguement in that claim.

.......not just for Top, 223rd. Lions encapsulated the ENTIRE sport--and all the managers...M/T...Pappy...Evans..made sure it remained visible to the community as a gathering place for aficionados. I maintain the Brackets and Class racing were as important as TF precisely because the track valued them in their own way as immovable from the natural development of drag racing. Those who do not 'get' this.....those who believe drag racing exists to owe them a living might look down at their soul when they hear a sucking sound........

Yeah, I gotta choose all the So-Cal strips, OCIR, Irwindale, Lions. They were legendary back here. The cam war ads in Drag News. Worked with a guy who while in LA in the Navy went to Lions every chance he could. Sure made me wanna pack up and go West!
