You know how soccer dads get recruited to carry the equipment, do some light coaching, help with the practicing, etc. Well music dads are basically the same. Emily played tonight for her last school program. Had 85 (count 'em) kids on stage in the orchestra. That's 85 chairs and 85 music stands. So we arrive an hour early to help set things up. You can see where this is going...
That's right, Jason and I moved 85 chairs and music stands out of the band room, down a set of stairs, and onto an empty stage while other parents/siblings filtered into the audience, had a seat, and chatted away... Denise set 'em all up where they belonged. After the concert, Denise (in her best teacher voice) told each kid to put their instrument away, then come back and take their ONE chair and music stand and put it back. Of course, she ended up chasing half the little malingerers who tried to sneak out. Some of the kids stayed and worked really hard. Same 15 percent who make things happen no matter where you go... Anyway, even with all the early departures, we got the stage cleared faster than we got it set up. The night had a silver lining... Emily was awarded the Director's Award for her school as the outstanding orchestra student of 2006. Go, Ems! Oh, PS... Denise informed me after the concert that she volunteered me for the same sort of duty on Saturday. Thanks, hon. bp
