We had a lot of drive-in movies back in the day...in Galveston we had the Oleander Drive-In...Art Deco style, a beautiful place. Big playground up in front of the elevated (sometimes 3-D...you wore the green and red shades) screen...huge concession stand...the place was infested with Texas-size mosquitos so we had these little spiral cones that you'd burn like incense and it was supposed to repel those little critters...the DDT truck'd come rolling through there a couple of times a night, too...those bugs'd put a whelp on ya for sure...in Texas City they had one called the Mainland, and that was the one me and Gina...Gina Statchitorie...used to go to with our little battery-powered turntable. We'd play house in my red, white and blue Volkswagen for a few hours while some movie'd be showing...they closed it down in the late 80s...3 screens...somebody airbrushed "BIG NASTY" on the marquee before it was demolished...anyway, check out This Day In History at Dangerous Bill's today. The lead story is about drive-in movies! Cheers, WC1
