We're back home. Saturday morning it was -15°f air temp. There was a lite wind, but I don't know what the wind chill calcuated to. Somewhere between very cold and bitter cold ? or maybe a little worse than that. Saturday I took off for a couple hours to cruise the area. First stop, out in the country, I pulled into a field drive way to get a photo of the spectacular sun dog display. Grabbed the inside door handle and it snapped off in my hand.
Maybe it was cracked or maybe it just didn't like the temps.
This morning it was -20f air temp. Burr. We got up early and headed for home. As we got close to Nashua, IA, I told Cheryl, we're a little ahead of schedule, (it was about 9:30am) what say we stop off in Nashua and got to the Little Brown Church in the Vale. The one "The Church in the Wildwood" song was written about. With the fresh snow, I was pretty sure we'd get some good shots. Didn't see any cars but there were tracks in the snow from the house across the street. So. I checked the door, it was open. I went in and the pastor was in front getting ready for his sermon. I asked of it was going to be too cold today for Church and he said nope, I was just a little early, Church didn't start intil 10:30am. We hung around and talked with the pastor until a little after 10. People started coming in so we let the pastor get back to his prep and talked with people as they came in. There was maybe 30 people there. They said they usually have 75 or so, but the temps kept many away. Church was very unformal and they sung the old hymns. And of course the last sone had to be "The Church in the Wildwood". As we were singing the last verse a little old lady came up to us and said, " would you 2 like to ring the bell for us"? That was pretty cool.
Then they invited us to stay for snacks afterwards in the basement. We learned a lot of interesting facts about the Church. FOr instance it was built during the civil war. Due to lead going to the war effort to make ammo, no lead paint was hard to find. They used lead in white pain, but not in brown, so the church was painted with the only paint available. That's where it got it's name, so the church has been brown ever since.
