 ^^^ there were plenty of things that could "kill ya" in the campgrounds in the 80's....
I've only heard stories about the campground and the old drive in, never experienced anything myself though..................Perry Jr.

I know that answer !! Back when there were only a handfull of (3 or5 ? ) a season of "NATIONAL EVENTS " things started happening on Tuesday running hard class cars to dwindle the fields,, non stop action untill Monday!! 50 fuel dragsters , tons of funnycars, pro/comp type cars and down the line giving it there best shot with their' best parts !! just trying to qualify for the biggest baddest dragrace ever !!... Am I CLOSE ?? :P

I don't remember the "Week-Long Madness" nickname, but that sure makes sense! I do remember it being called "The Big Go" and the Winternationals was "The Big Go West"...The US Nationals...man. What a great history and legacy we have. Life is good. WC1

:D we always used to spend 3 days/2 nights at INDY in the raceview campgrounds.... at first it was "just get there and see what happens " sleeping in a car etc. then we stepped up to my suburban and homemade tent structures along with a BBQ pit.... then advanced to a tag along JTP supplied camper running 12volt lighting off a borrowd fresh battery from the shell station.... never have been "plugged in" front row of the camp with full power/water etc... asllways paid the buck to take a cold shower along with the other dudes in the barracks style room in the campgrounds.. now the track has it's own restroom/shower facilities...

It wasn't only in the campgrounds that the madness took place. Saw some memorable things at the motels! The old Howard Johnsons nearest the track, in Indy, all the state troopers were put up there, and lots of racers too. Mini-bike drags in the parking lot, on nitro! And the cops stood out on their room balconies with cash in hand, betting on the outcomes! I saw motel drapes ripped down and torn into rags to clean parts. Every motel parking lot in the area had torn down race cars in the parking lot. My first Indy was 67. There was no place else on earth I'd rather spend Labor Day weekend, and there still isn't!

Doc & Cat
Both of you are very close to the answer, maybe Doc's a little closer.

Think ????? Theory If a butterfly flapping it's wings can cause a storm on the other side of the world?
That is one part and the other will lead you to an unorganized at any time conclusion.

Hint: I put some hints in here.
