Not the most famous athlete who ever put on a pair of cleats, but in 1980 he stepped in when J.R. Richard went down with a stroke and helped carry the Astros to their first-ever playoff season. After retiring as a player, he went into coaching and became one of the best pitching coaches in the National League. He was a great guy besides being a great team player. First Joe Niekro, now, Vern. Sure hate to lose these people we've had with us and taken for granted all this time. Rest in peace, Vern. WC1

The 80's Astro's pitching staff was amzazing. You think it would have been J.R. Richard to go first. very sad. Phil & Joe were my knuckleball heros!
