Former '70s Funny Car owner Dick Custy dies: Former Top Fuel and Funny Car owner/driver Dick Custy, who competed in the 1960s and ‘70s, died May 31, in Dallas of cancer. He was 58. Custy began racing Top Fuel in Colorado in the 1960s, and switched to Funny Car in 1970. Although an NHRA member, Custy largely confined his activities to AHRA (where he briefly led the points in 1975) and match racing, most notably on the Coke Cavalcade of Stars circuit. He retired in 1976 after a nasty fire suffered during competition at the Manufacturers Championship at Orange County Int’l Raceway in Southern California. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UTSW Medical Center, P.O. Box 910888, Dallas, TX 75391-0888; note “Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic.”
