Johnny Otis

Johnny played a major part in shaping the image, substance and aesthetics of Rock n' Roll; he was already cranking out Big-Time Boogie by the time Rock arrived. He championed the cause along with Alan Freed, Ike Turner, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, and he put the new crazy beat on the map for good. He was known as the Godfather of Rhythym & Blues, and he projected a socially acceptable image both as a performer and as a cultivator of talent. Frank Zappa fashioned his trademark facial hair after Johnny's style...

Simply put, without Johnny Otis, a huge chunk of Rock n' Roll history would never have happened. He caught a spark, and contributed a great art form to the world. Rest in peace, great man, and thanks. Condolences to Shuggie. WC1
