It’s with a heavy heart that we pass along this note.
Goodguys drag racer and street rodder Johnny Wood of Merced, CA passed away this morning at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. Wood had been hospitalized since July 2nd after suffering a severe stroke. His condition had deteriorated in recent days.
Wood was a favorite competitor on the Goodguys/VRA circuit, always fielding top notch race cars. He routinely traveled around the entire pit area at Goodguys events visiting with hundreds of friends and fellow competitors.
After driving his flamed 1932 Ford coupe for most of the 1970s and 1980s, Wood got bitten by the vintage drag racing bug, campaigning the “Wild Thing” 1933 Willys in Goodguys A/GAS competition in the 1990s. After a nasty crash in the A/GAS car at the 1996 March Meet – Johnny temporarily hung up the driving chores. His son Steve started racing as well eventually stepping up to the AA/GAS ranks with the Richwood Meats 1953 Studebaker.
In 2005, Johnny debuted a gorgeous yellow 1933 Willys in the C/GAS division which he took to third-round finishes in Pomona and Bakersfield.
Memorial services are currently being planned and will be passed along when they become available.
