Bluebaugh Racing’s Team AutoTrader has been running hard turning around two Semi Final finishes in two weeks. Most recently, the team attended the Pacific Street Car Association’s (PSCA) West Coast Shoot Out at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California July 25th-27th, 2008. Crew Chief Deborah Woodard said, we have been working on stepping up the power in the AutoTrader Monte Carlo, but we still have some things to work out.
Bluebaugh qualified the car in the third position, by simply making the usual clean consistent run in the first round of qualifying with a 6.580 @ 214.21 mph. Rounds two and three of qualifying brought frustrating tire shake on the hot track at the Auto Club Dragway. Woodard said, the increased power we are putting out has blown my clutch program, but we have to start pointing the AutoTrader Monte Carlo back into the 40’s to be competitive. We started to see it last weekend at the West Coast Hot Road Association’s (WCHRA) Mikes Transmissions Summer Nationals running the car to a 6.529 @ 214.28 qualifying number one. We already know we can run this car easy all day long at 6.58. The changes cost us with signing out in the Semi’s twice in this and the last race with the clutch, but in the long run the power increase will prove effective.
The first round PSCA eliminations brought a match against new comer Samis who was there testing his Booty Hunter GTO. Bluebaugh and Woodard shoe-stringed the Auto Trader Monte Carlo down the track with a light clutch to get by Samis with a 6.655 @ 210.41 over a 7.584 @ 194.94.
In round two eliminations Bluebaugh had the distinct honor of getting one last poke for old time’s sake at the infamous Black Accufab 57 Chevy of Ed Thornton. Sadly the car has been sold and is leaving the PSCA after winning four championships. As two old rivals took the start, each team had high anticipation over who would take the finish. It was really anyone’s race. There was even a side line fun wager between PSCA officials over who would win. Bluebaugh was first to leave putting a small hole shot on Thornton for a tough side by side race through most of the quarter. The Accufab 57 lost traction on the big end giving way to Bluebaugh who took the win with a 6.619 @ 212.46 over Thornton’s 7.039 @ 225.94.
The Semi’s brought Guiseppe Gentile’s Muscle Motors Turbo Mustang, which had been terrorizing the Prostreet field all day running in the mid- 6.30’s. With a toasted clutch and full heart, Bluebaugh turned on the nitrous early and hoped for the best. Gentile made light work of Bluebaugh taking the win with a 6.346 and a record breaking 229.12 mph to Bluebaugh’s 6.655 @ 209.10. Bluebaugh said, we are going to keep working our program with the AutoTrader Monte Carlo. While the potential did not show this weekend, we are on our way up. I would have loved to turn it all on but, we have to keep taking small steps and race smart.
