Kelly Bluebaugh and Team AutoTrader took the Prostreet victory from the 4th position at the West Coast Hot Rod Associations (WCHRA) Team Performance Products, Shootout at Sundown at the Famoso Dragway in Bakersfield, California August 15th-16th, 2008. The win was really a double victory as Bluebaugh and Crew Chief Deborah Woodard have been working towards getting the AutoTrader Monte Carlo back into the 6.40’s. Bluebaugh said, I think part of our problem has been in the chassis, so two weeks prior to the race we went through and completely reworked our 4-link setting. The changes paid off as the car is really biting like it should now and the 60 foot times have gone from 1.09 back down to 1.05. Woodard said, the recent adjustments to increase power and new chassis changes have our clutch program in the trash, however we are excited about potential the car is showing. We ran a 6.540 @ 216.39 at best roasting the clutch pretty much through the entire race. If history is any indicator, the clutch cost us a little over a tenth. Once we grab hold of the clutch again and get the car to lock up, it’s going to be right where we need it to be.
With no time for testing, the team struggled through the first several rounds of qualifying with the new chassis setting. In round 3, with help from fellow racer and local chassis expert Bill Hickok, a minor adjustment was made to the 4-link. Bluebaugh pedaled the AutoTrader Monte Carlo to a 6.690 @ 210.57 to take the 4th position on the ladder after qualifying first at the last two events.
In round one, Bluebaugh and the team met up with Tim Henry in his nitrous Con-quest Concrete Firebird. Woodard said this first round really made me nervous as Henry has been running fairly consistent 6.58’s and we just barely got the AutoTrader Monte Carlo down the track. I stood on the starting line watching with high hopes and anticipation. On the start Henry took a slight advantage, but Bluebaugh took the lead early in the run and never looked back taking the win with a 6.602 @ 215.15 over Henry who got out of the groove on the big end running a 7.397 @ 170.71.
In round 2, John Mihovetz gave Team AutoTrader a free pass to the final after not making the call due to engine problems with the Accufab Cougar. Bluebaugh and the team used the opportunity to test out some theories, which resulted in the 6.540 best of times for Team AutoTrader. Bluebaugh also managed to grab lane choice for the final by 2 thousands over the Petronix GTO of Clint Hairston who had qualified with a 6.51 in the number one position.
Everyone gathered to watch what was expected to be a side by side wild Prostreet final. Both competitors had shown fast times and it could be anyone’s win. As the staging started Bluebaugh boomed his motor as Hairston started to wind out his turbo’s. In an unexpected turn of events Hairston gave away the race when his line lock failed causing him to roll the beam and red light. Bluebaugh flew down the track to victory taking the win with a 6.563@ 216.65 mph.
Bluebaugh and Woodard want to thank Tom Nelson from Team Performance products that sponsored the trip and took care of two trailer tire blow outs on the way to the race. Nelson is his second year of support for Bluebaugh Racing and we have really been able to find success this year due to everything he has done for us.
