Bluebaugh Racing’s Team Magna Fuel started the season last weekend with a Semi-Finals finish at the West Coast Hot Rod Associations (WCHRA) season opener at Speed World in Phoenix. The Phoenix area saw some unseasonably warm weather for the event with track temperatures reaching up to 122 degrees mid-day, which posed difficulty for much of the Pro Street field. In qualifying, Bluebaugh held the number one position through the first two rounds putting down a 6.49 @ 217mph before being bumped to second by Clint Hairston in his Turbo powered Petronix GTO. Team Magna Fuel made an easy run to the semi’s after Randy Haggerty was unable to make the prior round call due to electrical problems. In the semi-final round, Bluebaugh met up with long time rival Ed Thorton who was in attendance attempting to get a handle on his new Accufab- M/T sponsored 63 Corvette. All were watching in anticipation to see if Bluebaugh’s consistency would get by Thorton who ran to the mid-30’s in the previous round. When the lights came down it was on. Coming off the line Bluebaugh spun the tires on the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo and headed for the wall but was not willing to give it up. Pedaling furiously, Bluebaugh fought to bring the car back into the groove. Thorton had difficulty as will as the Accufab- M/T Corvette veered toward the center of the track. It was an exciting pedal fest to the finish with the advantage and win going to Thorton. Bluebaugh said, I could see he was in trouble, so I kept after it. Once I got the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo straightened out, I was gaining quickly and just ran out of real estate.

Crew Chief Deborah Woodard said, we are going to continue to try and step the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo up to meet the challenges in the new year. So far our consistency has gotten us through, however the Turbo cars are starting to get a better grasp on their combination. We are going to really need to get the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo down into the 30’s to remain competitive. We are going to have a second look at details. The process has already started with a new set of custom headers from Fast Forward that we believe will better help exhaust the increases of fuel and nitrous we will be adding. We have also been consulting with Dale Cubic of Cubic Flow Modifications, Woodard went on to say. I think we can use the carburetor to find a better balance between cylinders than we have had before. Overall the car is working well. Team Magna Fuel is also working with Mickey Thompson’s R&D tire program. Bluebaugh said, we are going to be able to put more power to the ground with the tires we are getting in the program, so there are a just a number of things we are now open to do. Bluebaugh Racing’s Team Magna Fuel will be attending the next WCHRA event the first weekend of April in Bakersfield.
