RE: 65 CHEVELLE A/FX CAR INFORMATION WANTED

Postby CHEVYAFX » Fri Jul 03, 2009 5:44 pm

It has been a long time since I posted anything about the Chevelle.
After 2 years of searching I finally located Jim Adcock who drove the
TIGER II A/FX CHEVELLE. Jim is now 66 years old and living in the
Phoenix,Az area. After several phone calls & e-mails, I sent Jim copies
of the pictures I have as it sits today and Jim and his father (Andy) who
is now 87, and they are convinced that the body & chassis are from the
TIGER II CHEVELLE.
Two weeks ago on a trip to Phoenix, I was lucky enough to meet and
spend several hours with Jim & his father Andy. They are both still active
in street rods, Andy had come over to Jim's in his 32 coupe. I wish I had
taken a tape recorder with, because of some of the stories they told.
The car was raced throughout Texas,Oklahoma,New Mexico and in
Arizona a few times. The car was gold at first and later was painted blue. Jim has one color photo of the car, will post it when I get it.
Henry Schroeder of T-Bar Chassis built the car, ran a 376 enderle injected
small block. They ran fuel when it was converted to the center steer
configuation later and the car was converted to a 427 bbc near the end.
The car was sold to someone around Dallas sometime in 1968 and
what happened to it and who modified it further is still a mystery. Once
the tilt body funny cars came, the old A/FX cars days were numbered.
Still looking for some pictures showing more details of the car and
history before its years in storage in Alabama or Arkansas.
The current July Hot Rod Deluxe has a picture of the car on pg 39
from the 1965 Tulsa World Championships(later World Finals).

Enclosed are some of the most recent photographs I received from Jim Adcock after my visit with him and his
father Andy over the summer. The photo of the car in gold, Jim had showed me the original framed photo he had
when I was down in Phoenix over the summer. The others were a surprise. The car also was renamed sometime
after the BBC was installed (note the taller stacks) when they switched to the Hilborn injectors. The car also got the
spindle mount front wheels and the rear suspension was reworked and the rear wheels were moved almost to the rear
edge of the door jambs. Note in the photographs that the door frame and piller are gone, along with the rear window
in the photograph of the car on the trailer. Still trying to get more info about the "BLITZER" name from Jim.
I guess in the match racing circuit, the "run what you brung" was really the way it was.

Here are a few more photographs, one is of Jim in his firesuit, a picture I took over the summer of Jim(left) and
his dad Andy(right) holding a photograph of the TIGER II from Amarillo Dragway and one from Tulsa Dragway, both of
these are early configurations with the 376 Enderle Injected small block.
I also found a DVD converted from old 8mm movies from the Abilene Performance Car Association called "Blast
from the Past". It is about 3-4 hours long and covers many tracks from Texas along woth a few others.
It has about 20-25 seconds of the TIGER II in it from Green Valley Dragway, being it was converted from 8mm
film it is not the best and when you freezeframe it, it gets kinda blurry. But it is the only film footage I've found.
If anyone is interested in a copy of the DVD contact them at: http://www.abilenperformancecar.org.
