I.D. on 1968 Frank Huszar dragster

Postby scooter1 » Sun Apr 01, 2012 12:51 am

I'am looking for the original owner of a 172" 1968 Frank Huszar dragster . It was bought in 1974 by Bob Richy in the San Fernando valley . The engine was missing and was a full body car . The paint was yellow and green stripes but may have been white . There is a very distinctive dip in the cowl from the windshield to the motor plate . I have owned this car for ten years . The oldest picture is of 1974 . Thank you , Chuck chucksdragster1@aol.com I can e-mail pictures

Hmm, might the chassis appear to have once been designed to house a SBC? There was a junior gas dragster that bared that description that emanated from San Fernando. It was raced by a guy named Phil Coonce. He bought it from Roger Gates. I have made efforts of inquiry to them and/or freinds to verify if maybe it was this car. Got any pictures, that would a great deal.

Below is Roger gates response to my inquiry.

And I quote: "If it was the car that Phil had it was basically a California Chasis Eng. car that we built at Don's shop (Tuttle - Daves dad). The car was painted somewhat like the Beebe & Mulligan T/F car by Phil & his partner @ Carters shop. It only had a shorty nose from the front of the engine about 3/4 feet long at the time. That car got rear ended on an open trailer & knocked off going down the Golden State freeway coming back from Orange County just after they got it & switched to the Jr Gas deal. RCS may have put a new front half on it as I was in graduate school right then & didn't have much time, but I thaught Don (Tuttle) fixed it, unless that was when his Parkenson's was real bad. If it is the car, it originally had a torsion bar rear suspension in it & will have two round tubes on the lower rails at the back for torsion arms that went forward. We put John Lombardo's Chrysler & Torqueflite in it to kill the world. It didn't work very well & went back to a solid Chrysler rear end & the Chevy Motor. That was a wierd feeling to sit in the seat & feel the suspension move under your legs. Anyway: I went to driving a fuel car about then for someone else because of everything going on. The last I heard of Phil he was on Vancouver Island & had a Top Alcohol car."

Thank you very much for the information . I was told by Bob Richy ( he owned my car in 1974) that it had chev. motor mounts when he bought it . I was sent a picture of a car that has the same paint job and has a SBC and was a JR. fuel car . When Bob had the car it was a full body car . I will send the pictures I have .I don't see any signs of a torsion bar . Thanks again . Chuck

In veiwing the car it might be either Bob Williams or Penho and Pellor. Go ahead and post the picture as it will no doubt incite some commentary.
