Went to the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh one night to see America, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor. This was probably in the mid. 70's. The roof of the arena opened up and they opened it that night which was a real treat. I don't think it was so much for the view, but to let the wacky weed smoke out.

Bob Kuban and the INman.... on a Mobile Gas station parking lot with the Kendall's who had a barbershop next door... free deal and rode my homemade chopper 1 speed bycycle to the top of the street.... still have a broken drumstick that was tossed into the crowd ! I was about 11

Best concerts were/are IMHO;

1. DoobieBrothers 1979 - 5 Seasons Convention Center, Cedar Rapids
2. Kiss 1977 - Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Des Moines
3. Alice Cooper/Eddy Money 1978, Uni-Dome, Waterloo
4. Rolling Stones/ZZ Top 1981, Cotton Bowl, Dallas

Recent concerts we went to were, Chieftains at Myerson Center, Dallas and a very good show from the Trans Siberian Orchestra, AA Center, Dallas in Dec.

..when not at the strip on a typical Sat. night in the late 70's and early 80's, I'd often be at the Seattle Paramount Theater...saw The Ramones there for 4.00 a ticket. The opening band? Just up from Hollywood (Cali AND Fla.!), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Same place: Greg Kihn with Seattle's Jim Basnight opening.

I attended a show in the tiny Masonic Aud. in Seattle--stone cold sober--on Halloween, 1978. Robert Hunter, lyricist for the Dead, played a friendly acoustic set for about 150 of us..if that. I was looking forward to seeing him again; I'd spent the first few minutes of legal drinking age at a Hunter show at the Rainbow Tavern. What an amazing opener: Keith and Donna Godchaux played a long, gentle, tight, very musical and very drunk set with a kick ass band from Brooklyn called the Ghosts. As I understand it, such was their only appearance together. What a shame! It served a future reference point..years later, I attended many Grateful Dead shows..also sober. I'd love to share those as our winter silly season kicks in. Thanks for a great, inclusive environment Bill.....

Great stuff, coffee! I bet the Ramones were excellent...you saw history there. I always preferred the more intimate settings. I got to see some great acts like that in the 70s, but after that it turned into mega-stadium concerts and I don't like to be in the middle of it...in the smaller venues, I've seen awesome shows by Lightnin' Hopkins (probably the best one ever), Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder opening for Captain Beefheart (right after "Trout Mask Replica" came out...they pulled it off live just like the record...I could not believe it), Randy Newman with just him and a piano, one night I drifted into a record store in '79 and Robert Fripp was in there giving a demonstration of his quad-sound, dual tape-loop process called Frippertronics. He played for an hour by himself sitting right next to me and he had those tape loops spinning and he created an otherworldly sound. Nice guy, too, but definitely on another wavelength altogether...Happy Friday, WC1
