Incredibly tough to pick favorites, but right now, over the long term, I'd say that Mark Knopfler has snuck into the lead. Consistently great stuff, from Dire Straits to his recent collaboration with Emmy Lou Harris. So many more favorites that it's hard to list 'em all. bp

I had the advantage of thinking about who I was going to list before I started the thread.
But as old as I am, I have a Dire Straits album. Love Mark's playing.
Once saw Linda Ronstadt and the Neville Brothers in concert. She never missed a note all night.
My Dad was an opera fan and the whole family went to classical music concerts, so I'm a real mixed bag musically.
But, if they can't play well, or sing on key, I'm not going to be a fan.

Yeah... a few more come to mind. Trying to pick someone who I can listen to hundreds of times without getting tired of it. Now that's a hard trick.

Neil Young has put out dozens of albums, many of which I have. All of them are terrific in one way or another. Great, great talent.

Traffic, especially on John Barleycorn Must Die, is timeless. I can listen to those competing flutes and extended jams over and over.

Carlos Santana was my favorite when I was 12 and he was a family favorite when my kids were 12 (and now 16 and 13). From Woodstock to his recent collaboration albums with today's artists, Carlos has been consistently excellent.

Roxy Music captured an avant-garde, urban sound that I loved in the states. It was pure urban Europe on a rainy night. When I joined the Navy and found myself on urban European streets at night, I recognized the place having listened to Roxy. (PS - On that note and back to Knopfler, Dire Straits' "Down to the Waterline" so fully captured the essence of being a sailor trolling the port town bars that it still sends chills up my spine.) Viva! Roxy Music is perhaps one of the top two or three live albums of all time.

OK, that was four, but hey, it's my site! bp

Right on the money about Roxy Music, BP. Somehow that band slipped my mind when I was making my list. Great, creative band with visual soundscapes. "Siren" was my favorite, could have been the Jerry Hall cover with her all dolled-up as a mermaid, but "Manifesto" was reading my mail. I wish they would have been together during the early days of MTV and made a video or two or three...I'm sure a live DVD exists somewhere. I can't remember the name of that band from New Zealand that had a hit in around 2000 with a song called "How Bizzarre", but they were diong a tongue-in-cheek Roxy Music imitation all the way, down to the Bryan Ferry look and (sort of) sound. Bryan Ferry has a ton of soul. Also, "Stop Making Sense" by Talking Heads is a great live trip...Cheers, WC1
