man i am getting old fast

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

man i am getting old fast

 I spent 12 hours today/night with my good friend JTP (John the Plumber).... He had a for a favor gig at a new bar/beer garden in his home town to set up his stuff to play guitar(s) and sing backed up by recorded discs.... kind of like kareoke but live singing and playing.... it was to be a 4-8 pm little deal.... something to do on a great outdoor Oct. afternoon... I helped set up and worked the sound board for John... from 2-3:30 i think i counted 30 folks sitting around the outdoor garden... nice little crowd.. closer to about 7pm when the sun had set the place started filling up.... John's son Jim and his buddy showed up ( we are in our 50's) the younger guys in their 20's.... the younger dudes started playing during our break.. great stuff mostly original tunes....by quiting time (8pm) the place was filling up(beautiful evening outside) and the joint was really starting to jump! Jtp went back up and played another 45 minuites.... then his son Jim and his buddy took over the deal and played another half hour or so.... then a couple other dudes that we know showed up and played and sang and we were bumping on 10 pm.... curfew for loud music in the historic town of Florissant Mo. At 10 pm we had to shut the deal down.... no dicker sticker on the deal as rules are rules.. during the breakdown of equimpment and loading it seems to me that every goodlooking gal in St.Lois county was just getting there :P to begin to party !! Having been there since 2 in the afternoon in the sun i was starting to yawn, feeling hungry, my back was hurting, just looking to get packed up and get home.... now it is about 11pm.... the bar is full of young folks just getting started for the night (i remember those days).. so here i am wishing for a cup of coffee, wishing i was allready home, wrapping up cords and hoisting speaker cabinets etc into a plumbing van whilst out of the corner of my eyes seeing late shift waitresses coming on duty 30 years younger than the ones working in the afternoon when WE got there .. By the time we were all packed up the owner paid John twice what the deal was and set up 2 buckets of beer... so of course we stayed a little longer than planned :P got home after midnight... :P that's my what i did this weekend story  8)

Good report Doc. I enjoyed reading it. When we were growing up, you went out around 7pm, and home by midnight. As I got a little older, it was home by 2AM, but the girls still had to be home by 12-1AM.

Now days the kids don't leave home until 10-11-12 and stay out all night. Weird deal, but times do change I guess.

Great report, Jim. I too find myself enjoying the scenery on a daily basis but increasingly finding that I'm not really thinking about closing the deal with any of them. The Renaissance Festival yesterday gave me a chance to test this. The entire day was mostly about cleavage. Young cleavage, old cleavage, deep cleavage, shallow cleavage, pink cleavage, dried out tan cleavage, you name it. From 18 to 80, the ladies were putting 'em out on display. Some were amazing, others frankly laughable, but it was interesting to find that I didn't seriously think about getting with any of these gals. I'm no saint; I'm just not interested. Another funny thing happened on the commuter bus I ride this summer. Jason was interning with me at work and he and I were commenting on a really cute mid 20 something gal on the bus. She's a real sweetie who is amazingly hot (but doesn't seem to know it). She is fun to talk to and we regularly chat. I was thinking how much older she was than Jason (he's 16). But when I AVERAGED Jason's age and mine, I found that we still had ten years on her! That's when you know you are getting old... when averaging your age with your 16 year old son still puts you in the mid 30s! These days, all I do is watch and enjoy the scenery... bp

Sounds like a great time, Doc...gigs have a way of taking on their own identity. Most of them are exactly the same (hence, WC1's "Merry-Go-Round" description) but every now and then, one comes up that stands out. It sounds to me like JTP carried the gig with a young crowd and did great. The kids (I call them kids because they're young enough to be my kids...or grandkids...I probably dated their Mommies back when they were single) often are amazed at the quality and depth of the kind of music that JTP delivers, and they learn a lot about the roots of their music as well as discover a whole world of great music that they never had the chance to enjoy. "Our" music is often percieved by the young crowd as our parents' generation's music is seen by us...I could not relate to a lot of big-band/swing era music because the guys that played it were conservative-looking middle-aged men with a restrained style that came across to me like it was my Dad singing to me, and it turned me off. It wasn't until I was "older" that I began to appreciate the quality and style that those guys pervayed. Same deal here: They have it in their heads that this is their parents up there and they basically have an attitude built-in about what's coming at them, but JTP played good rock n' roll and he delivered...so the "kids" dug him and his stuff...great job by JTP for winning over the most difficult of audiences to play to. Life is good. Thanks for hanging in there with him and helping him out, Doc...great weekend gig story...Cheers, WC1

:D yep WC... JTP puts on a heck of a 1-man show.. a van FULL of equiptment is set up just like the old full band days only without the humans.. the young guys mentioned were all taught by JTP and John enjoys kicking back with the crowd watching his son Jimmy and the others perform as much as he likes being on stage... One of these days i will try to get a youtube type of deal recorded... i saw a bunch of cellphone cameras being used last night so maybe i can score some pics..
