happy to report i will be re-joining JTP and his brother-inlaw in the group as a back-up player on guitar/keys this spring.... fun bunch of guys with no ego's... just hammer out the stuff, have a beer and enjoy it for whatever it's worth..... my delema is what shirt should i wear? yellow Draglist, Cat's Four Lifetimes, Mike's team shirt, Kendall racing from Barb? All i know for sure is Levi's and Fix0dent.... might be fun

Last weekend was interesting...different...Friday night we played a casual gig at the VFW in Santa Fe, TX, it was enjoyable because the folks there are "our crowd" and they partied and danced all night long. It's gratifying to look out into the crowd and everybody is smiling at you. We played the gig for free, it was officially a fundraiser for the VFW post, but at the end of the night after the tip jar got counted out, we left with $115 per man. Saturday night, I rode with Sylvester to the gig we had uptown. Way, WAY uptown. The name of the place is La Colombe D'or, but I always knew it as the Fondren Mansion on Montrose Boulevard. The room we played in is a grand ballroom that was carved by hand in 1715 in France and used as the most elite of party rooms, I'm putting the URL to this place in at the end of this post. It was absolutely fabulous. The folks throwing this shindig are quite well to do, of course, and we only had to play for about an hour and a half. They made sure we were served the same meal the guests had, too...so we rocked 'em. At the end of the night, I was carefully putting all my stuff together and this 20-year-old kid came up to me and he said "I just wanted you to know I'm a guitar player and I watched you all night. You're a great player and you put on a great show." And he shook my hand. I was stunned...I didn't see this guy till right then and he made that special visit to give me a compliment. I really appreciated that. I gave him a card and thanked him. We appear to have landed another high-class gig out of this one. One of the ladies wants us to play at her house. We will enjoy to. Anyway, coming up is Mardi Gras in Galveston. We're playing the Galvez Hotel at a private function Friday night and Saturday night we're playing at the Rooftop Garden on the Strand at another private gig. Both nights, tux. Should be fun! Anyway, the first URL I'm posting is about Walter W. Fondren, a co-founder of Humble Oil Company (later Exxon), whose house is now La Colombe D'or. Mr. Fondren was a great man. He lived the American Dream and once he got on top, he gave a lot of it away. Ya can't take it with you, ya know. I was honored to be in his house. Mardi Gras rages on...last Friday night we played at the Grand Krewe kickoff at the Galvez Hotel on Seawall Boulevard. I probably already posted the URL to the Galvez, but it's a historical place, kind of looks White-Star-Line inside. The folks throwing these hoots are rich, upper-class people and they get some kind of tax write-off for doing it, like their proceeds go to charity or something...I am probably going too deep there, but I have time to think while I'm driving the 75 miles home after the gig...I didn't figure out the theme of their deal, but it was high formal. We tore into 'em like a tidal wave and they flipped...during one of our breaks, the ladies put on their favorite CD..."Dancing Queen" by ABBA. I remarked to Hank, that when ABBA was doing a press conference, one of the reporters said to Agneta, "It is said that you have the most beautiful bottom in rock..." She said "I don't know. I've never seen it." Anyway, Pee Wee got us another gig from that. They loved us. They told him they wish they'd gotten us for both of their events (they have TWO of these deals?) and they promised him we're their band next year for everything. The next night (Saturday) we played at the Rooftop Garden on the Strand, in Galveston's ancient downtown area. This theme was the Roaring Twenties. All the folks there were dressed up as gangsters and flappers, and they were lit up like crazy when they showed up. We played traditional Mardi Gras marches and they snake-danced around the place, we played rock 'n roll and they did the jungle boogie...we did the soul hits and they melted together...Pee Wee had women draped on him like curtains. They paid more than the Galvez folks did but the crowd was about half the size of the previous night's group. Pee Wee makes different deals with different people. I hung out with Al Capone during one of our breaks and we had laughs and compared wives and experiences...playing in this band is a never-ending adventure. We have fun. We had JG with us on sax and he knows a lot of fancy dance steps (he played with the Temptations for several years), and we did the whole show doing choreographed dance moves while we played...the crowd LOVED it...funny thing was we just did it. There was no rehearsing any of it. Once I caught JG and Sylvester out of the corner of my eye, I fell right in with 'em. The band is up to playing around 140 shows a year now. We're becoming very popular. Next week, we're playing Friday night for the Krewe of Banner (the gays) at the Pink Dolphin on the Strand. That oughta be one hell of a story...we played for them a few years ago at the Balinese, which was destroyed by Ike in '08. But I remember they paid us extremely well, there were a thousand people there for that gig, and nobody pulled any funny stuff on us. So what the heck. We like 'em and they like us. Then next Saturday night we're playing at Crow's Cantina on the Strand...it's a public gig and we are going to be swamped with revelers. I wish I could take pictures while I play.
