This Day In History

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

It was Fats Domino playing the intro to "Blueberry Hill" on the scratchy AM radio in me and my sister's babysitter's boyfriend's car at the beachfront roller skating rink on a Sunday evening in 1957 that struck me like a thunderbolt, blew my mind, and changed me forever. I was 8 years old, between my 2nd and 3rd years of a 10-year classical piano and music theory training marathon at the Dominican Nun convent's music conservatory in Galveston. Up to that point, I wanted to be like Liberace. After hearing that song, I wanted for the rest of my life to be like Fats Domino. I'm still trying. The band I play in does that song. Life is good.

Hail, Hail, Rock n' Roll! Long live Antoine "Fats" Domino, the coolest cat to ever slick his hair back, put on a zoot suit, and rock out on a piano. In my world, nothing has ever topped that song ("Twilight Time" by the Platters runs a close second). It's beautiful stuff. Thanks for the info, Gate! Happy Birthday, Fats! Cheers, WC1
Great part of your life..well told WC1.
I too , well remember "Chuck's Diner" , Owego Ny, with my folks...hearing "Blueberry Hill" the 1st time.
It blew me away !
A cool Cat for sure.."Fats"

Happy belated birthday, Andy!

Motorsports legend, benefactor to many winning racers...he also had a great product...wasn't that the STP car that was so controversial, a turbo...led Indy until the last lap in '68? Cheers, WC1

June 6. 1944 French coastline. D-day where far too many "boys" perished that morning.
