Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

8) ok WC i will kick this off....Imentioned my friend Barbara Carr.. well known in Europe and a big following here in St.Louis.. radio airplay, big club gigs, over the years she has performed with some big names... the problem seems to me is writing good songs..Example.. she has at least 3 albums that i know of.. Footprints On The Ceiling... great album..What A Woman Wants.... not bad.... Bone Me Like You Own Me.... you see where i'm going with this !! those are the names of albums  now song titles get even farther OUT THERE  and the words to those songs are even worse..

I wrote this the night I got home from my Mother's funeral in 1987. The music follows a chord progression by Tom Waits but I put my own lyrics to it. WC1

WAY DOWN IN THE HOLE Lyrics by John R. Bockelman, 1987

I got a visit from the Devil
He came and stood next to my bed
He said “I’m gonna get you, boy…
In two years, you will be dead.”
I don’t want that situation
‘Cause the ground is so cold
Help me put the Devil
Way down in the hole

Now, the Bible tells me
‘Bout how to seek the Lord
Said “If you want to walk in Heaven
You gotta heed that word.”
Lead us not into temptation
Don’t want to lose my soul
Help me put Satan
Way down in the hole

Shootin’ dice and drinkin’ whiskey
Throwin’ away all my dough
It ain’t gonna make me happy
Just gonna make me get old
I won’t yield unto temptation
Because that hand is so cold
I gotta put the Prince of Darkness
Way down in the hole

Now, my momma, she done told me
“Boy, don’t you lose control...
You ain’t gonna get to Heaven
Just playin’ blues and rock n’ roll.”
I appreciate your good intentions, Mama
Don’t leave me outside in the cold
You gotta help me put Legba
Way down in the hole

Way down in the hole
Way down in the hole
Way down in the hole
Way down in the hole
I appreciate your good intentions
Don’t leave me outside in the cold
Help me put the Devil
Way down in the hole

I thought Muhammad Ali was the William Shakespeare of the 1960s. The guy was gifted, not only as a boxer (in my opinion, the last real boxer) but as an artist and as an individual who stood up to adversity. Here's one I wrote in 1989, "Six-String Devil". I auctioned he guitar off that inspired this song at "Blues For Becky" in early 2004. Cheers, WC1

SIX-STRING DEVIL By John R. Bockelman 1989

When I was a little boy
I had to have me a toy
I didn't like it in school
Live by somebody else's rules
You became my friend
With six strings I could bend
You were plated in gold
And you played Rock 'n Roll

Six-String Devil
Got the world by the tail
Six-String Devil
Keepin' me out of jail

I had to play the Blues
You made me pay my dues
It gave me such a thrill
I had to get my fill
When I became a man
You were part of my hand
You made me feel so cool
But I was hooked on you

Six-String Devil
I gave you that name
Six-String Devil
'Cause you're one and the same

You went and wrecked my life
You took away my wife
You operated my mind
And treated me so unkind
Now I'm falling down
In every dive in town
I try to let you go - go - go
You got a grip on my soul

Six-String Devil
Made a mess out of me
Six-String Devil
You gotta set me free

On the studio demo I made of this song, I slowed the tape down to 2/3rds of the normal speed to record my vocal...I came out sounding like Robert Plant taking hits off of a helium balloon, but it fit the music like I wanted it to. Metallic Blues/Rock. Nowadays when I do this song, I drop the key down 6 steps and sing it in a lower voice. I don't know what I'm going to do with all the dadgum songs I wrote. Most of 'em are just sitting there collecting dust. WC1
