Mr. Goodvibes

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

My sisters and brother were down this weekend and we were reminiscing about our little ghost from the days when we lived in the projects in Cleveland. Those buildings have been bulldozed in the past several years and we have been wondering what might have happened to him. The funny thing is, we all take it as fact because we were there. We were so young that there was never any back and forth about the reality of it. It just was. My visit with Mr. Goodvibes a few years ago was interesting and not unpleasant. I was taking a shower in John's bathroom and had put my glasses on the counter (before my Lasik). When I came out of the shower, my glasses were in the bathroom sink, lenses down and stems sticking straight up. Now, I suppose it's possible that some sort of vibration could have knocked them into the sink and they could have landed that way, but... bp

I remember you telling me about that, BP...You were right where he hangs out...you had a ghost when you and your brothers and sisters were kids? What's the story? I told my sister today on the way back to Houston from Galveston about all this, and that Sylvester had told me that I brought the ghost with me here in something from the old house...she said "The old trunk from the attic."

Sunday night I couldn't sleep. I'd played a concert that day at a park in Cinco Ranch, I took a shower and got to bed around Midnight. Restless. Uncomfortable. Tossed and turned, couldn't relax. I finally dozed off around 2:30. At 3:45, My son Nick walked up to me in the dark, nudged me and said "Say, Dad?" I immediately came fully awake. I said "What, Nick? What's going on?" I reached over and turned on the light...there was no one there. I didn't sleep again until last night. WC1

...you had a ghost when you and your brothers and sisters were kids? What's the story?
Yes. Short little thing. Used to watch us when it thought we weren't looking. We would try to use our peripheral vision to study it as much as we could without moving, but invariably one us would move it and would zip behind up the stairs (staircase behind the living room wall). We'd all hurriedly run to the bottom of the steps and see it zip out of sight at the top of the stairs. In the middle bedroom, we often saw it hovering in the doorway, just watching. I would try with all my might to see what it was, but it was just a gray shadow against the black. When I would twitch, it would zip away. We always thought it was a little boy and someone told us that a little boy who'd lived in that apartment had climbed one of the smokestacks in the steel mills and fell in. Can't confirm that. I've looked for ghosts everywhere else I've been in my life, but nothing until your house and Mr. Goodvibes. But as I said, they've torn down those apartments and built a highway. A few years ago, I said to my sister Judy that I wonder what would happen to our little ghost. She excitedly remembered that she had gone by the old, abandoned apartments and took photos of our place. When she developed the photos, she was surprised to see what appeared to be an apparition smiling down at her from an upstairs window, with surprisingly, another taller figure behind the smaller one. Either that, or the sun caught a weird design on the screen, but given our history in the apartment, it was a shocking photo. I'll try to find that. I think I have it scanned. bp

Just looked at all the pics on the computer and didn't see it (there were thousands of photos, so I may have missed it). I'll keep looking. bp

That is a great story. I have been wondering what happened to the little ghost as well. I know when they tore down the Ale House here in Houston, it was listed on the haunted houses site. They moved all the furniture from the Ale House to the Stag's Head after it was gone, but I haven't heard of any sightings there since, and it's been around 8 years since they moved. I was furious when they tore the Ale House down and put a mini strip center there with a coffee shop. It's more junk replacing an historical landmark. Anyway, thanks for that story. Cheers, WC1

Don't mean to drive this story into the ground, but Mr. Goodvibes has it going on these days. Now, here I am struggling to keep from falling into the stay up all night - sleep too late thing. I've been up every night until around 3:30 in the morning. As it turns out, I've found out what Mr. Goodvibes' schedule is. He's out there in the hall raising all kinds of hell between 3 and 4 AM, every night. He's come into the bedroom and whacked me on the back, woke me up, had a laugh and split by the time I got the light turned on. I figured out that he can't get in the bedroom if the door's locked. I hear him walking around in the hall, pressing on the door, trying the handle, slapping the walls and muttering. Just as if it was somebody out there trying to get in. Debby sleeps through all of it. I'm a full grown man but I leave the TV on all night. I got ticked off at him because he was coming in waking me up and it's hard enough to sleep as it is knowing what's going on. Cheers, WC1
