What's on the Jukebox?

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

One of the members over at DRU has been bugging me to tell what my fave songs of the moment are, and I figured this post would also serve well as a "What's On the Jukebox?" contribution... I usually create a new "fresh" CD of various songs once a month for listening in my cars-- I guess I'm "old fashion" because I still have CD players in my cars... Anyways, here's some of the songs on the CD I'm currently listening to... Yes We Can Can by The Pointer Sisters (a masterpiece of the "Sisters'" vocal prowess, real heartfelt pop soul)... Lay Down & Brand New Key by Melanie Safka (Melanie has an incredible voice and delivery)... Mama Told Me Not To Come by Three Dog Night (I love the keyboard sound on this one)... Next Big Thing by The Dictators (love it)... Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan (one of the best extremely depressing songs dressed-up & disguised as a pop tune EVER)... Down Down by Status Quo (I met "Quo" in the U.K., they're great, they and Big Stick are both included in John Peel's "Record Box" in conjunction with the U.K. Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame)... Friends Electric by Gary Numan (so cool, great synth sounds, and I love the way he never actually sings, just kinda talks his way through the song)... Everyday People by Sly & The Family Stone (what's not to like?)... Candy-O by The Cars (electro-rock with processed vocals at its best)... Did You No Wrong by the S*x Pistols (I got to hang out with John Lydon in London, he's so down to earth, this one has the best superb sloppy electric guitar)... Planet Claire by the B-52s (as you know, Fred Schneider is a friend and sang vocals on one of our new Big Stick recordings "Hot Sauce" and I believe Planet Claire is one of their finest)... She Burned Me Down & Some Stupid Tomorrow by Type O Negative (2 tracks from TON's "Dead Again" LP, we still feel bad about the loss of Peter Steele, listening to these songs helps-- Type O drummer Johnny Kelly is supposed to play drums with Big Stick on a new track)... Whew!!-- That's all the time and energy I have to divulge my current music faves at this time... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

Great stuff from both Docs! I've been listening to a couple of Gene Harris CDs. His work as a solo pianist has inspired me the same way that Keith Jarrett did in the late 70s, and his work with his quartet is excellent as well. I prefer Gene's solo performances because they showcase his entire ability without the distractions that a full band can add to a virtuoso performance. I sit here and do graphics while my son Nick's bands play in the garage. The band's names are Urine Trouble (death metal), Gorilla P**s (more of the same), and Macrocosm (techno-funk)...I like all of them but Macrocosm is the most intriguing and intelligent of all 3 bands. Highly melodic, trance-inducing music with a soulful bottom that propels toe-tapping and impure thoughts with a tincture of Sci-Fi added to keep it all on edge. It's all instrumental...a keyboard player named Austin and Nick at this time but they get a full sound. I like the other groups but they bludgeon you to death with breakneck speed and nuclear power whereas Macrocosm produces an intergalactic pulse which vibrates cerebral landscapes and makes your booty shake at the same time...sometimes I want to go in and jam with them...but I probably couldn't play gigs with them because I'm already booked through 2012 with Pee Wee and OTA, so I won't waste their time playing bass to their music. They are great, though, in my opinion. I'm playing in 2 cover bands that are very popular in this region, yet most of what I know, I wrote. Nick and his boys are all-original, so I relate to their stuff more. I also listened to some new Chris Youlden (his voice and style changed...he's a rhythym and blues tenor now as opposed to his hardcore hell-raising deep-voiced years fronting Savoy Brown) and Alan Price's music on youtube. Alan Price was the keyboard player for the Animals in the 60s and I always thought he was by far the best musician of the early-to-mid British Invasion (with respects to Rod Argent and Denny Laine...Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott came along soon after)...self-taught, affable and uncompromising, he took Dylan under his wing in London in '64 and helped plant the idea of folk-rock in Dylan's imagination (His version of "House Of The Rising Sun" galvanized Dylan, who had recorded a solo acoustic version on his first album). Alan's playing made me a fan and his personality helped give confidence and creative inspiration to a lot of people, including me. Cheers, WC1

Is that guy awesome or what...thanks for the link, Wheelz!
He always sounded to me like a one-man Allman Brothers Band...of course, his daddy, Butch Trucks, is their drummer...and he's named after one of the all-time rock classic albums that his "uncle" Duane played on. He's the genuine article, a pure-bred second-generation rocker...and in my opinion, he's the best of them all...if Jeff Buckley had lived, though, he'd be tied for first place. I always liked Julian Lennon, Norah Jones, Dweezil Zappa, there are many...but Derek Trucks, Like Randy California (Ed Cassidy's stepson) is a major artist in his own right, and in my opinion he's the ultimate white soul/Southern rock guitar slinger/vocalist, with respects to Warren Haynes. GREAT music! WC1

...an hour of Frank Zappa guitar solos from various concerts around the world...his arsenal of licks is infinite...it's an unending multiple-voiced dialogue of musical genius into insanity. There's such a fine line between them and he blurred it every time he played. Virtuosity and skill meets apocalyptic here and now, over at Uncle Meat's place...unbelievable...just clean outta sight.
