Lyle's Wild Weekend in Vegas
By Lyle Greenberg
Draglist pal Lyle Greenberg made it into the Federal Mogul Funny Car show at Las Vegas, qualifying 14th at 6.104 @ 237.21. Here's his story of how the weekend went.
We stunk the place up on Friday -- just flat couldn't get the car to go down the track. On the second session we shook the car about as hard as we ever have, which is really bad! That came as kind of a surprise as we had been very consistent at the Phoenix national event. We had our backs to the wall for the third session. I went back to square one on the tune-up and the car made a decent lap. Unfortunately, when you are #14, you race #3 -- in this case, Pat Austin. Knowing what a tough deal that would be, I hopped it up for the first round. I had a slightly better reaction time, but the car started shaking pretty bad. Given that what little chance I might have had would be gone if I pedaled, I tried to drive through it and ended up crossing the centerline.
As most of you know, I take a lot of pride in going to these deals and getting in the show on a very small budget. Based on that, we had a successful outing. Plus, the total breakage for the weekend (at least that I know of <g>) is a couple of pushrods and adjusters. Now we just have to qualify a little better to stay away from the Austin clan (we ran Bucky in the first round at Phoenix).
