Drag Racing Story of the Day!

The First Blown Funny Car Show

By Bob Snayko

Bobby Woods won the first "King of Kings" Funny Car show on August 13, 1966, with a bye run over Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norms car (the trans went in the ex Lindamood Coronet). I believe Stone, Woods & Cooke won the ‘67 event (they did not participate at the first race) as is only fitting.

Other notables included Draglist friend Walt "THUMBS" Stevens in the AMT PIRANHA, who carded an 8.75 @ 186.32 in his first round win over Don Gay. "Thumbs" redlit in the next round against eventual winner Bobby Woods. This race marked the first time eight blown funny cars had been assembled for a race.
