I remember going out to San Fernando drag strip and making some money to
pay the bills. We used to talk Harry Hibler into putting up some money for
top time. We ran OK – but not always the fastest. When I was driving The
Trip, we would get to 1200 feet and get on the brakes real hard to the get
the front wheels to come off the ground and clear the first set of lights.
My rear wheels would trip the first beam. Then I'd time it so the front
wheels would be back on the ground to trip the second beam and we would set
top time.
Harry would get pissed and would come down and get on me big time for
doing that. But he paid. We won some there at "The Pond." We won
13 weeks in a roooooooooooow when I drove The Outcast. That little 354 liked
the track. I would drive it out to about half-track and then get with it.
Would smoke them old M&Hs, so we lifted. Miss those good old days.
