Hi gang. Just a funny story from long ago....
It was a gorgeous spring day in about '75 or '76. I was about 19 or so
and stopped by my good friend Bob's house on my motorcycle. He lived in the
city and it was not unusual to have several guys all hanging out. On this
particular evening, there were several guys hanging out at his place
probably watching him and/or his brother Tom work magic on the Mustang.
Well, Bob had never ridden a bike before on the street or if he had, not
much. My helmet fit him so off he went. He was gone a LONG time.
When he came around the corner a block away, he was on the gas and
leaning into it. As a new biker however, he had failed to keep his eye on
his rear view mirrors and for-God-only-knows how long, had been tailed by a
policeman with his gumballs flashing (no siren though). Bob pulls up to the
group of guys there at the end of his driveway, pulls the helmet off with an
ear-to-ear grin going on and saying how much fun he had. About all we could
say was "Look behind you."
This policeman was not just a little irritated, he was REALLY irate.
After the general ream job, Bob asked the officer "How fast was I
going?" to which the officer snarled "Do you want to know your TOP
speed or your AVERAGE speed?" After all was said and done, Johnny Law
lightened up some and gave him a ticket only for not having a motorcycle
endorsement. To this day, it's a standing joke..."Do you want to know
your TOP speed or your AVERAGE speed?"
BTW, that little 250cc Suzuki would go an even 100 mph. Clocking it with
a stopwatch on the e-way markers though confirmed my suspicion that the
speedo was off by about 10%. Next time I'll tell you about the time I was
north of Fairview going 100, and the bear ran out in front of me.
