Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Tommy Ivo's Heroes

By "TV Tommy" Ivo

Tommy Ivo at San Gabe. Jim Kelly photo courtesy of Dick TowersCan you imagine how much fun it was from the driver's seat racing Chris Karamesines when we would go at it with each other, wheels up? He would always treat me like his son. In a nice way. He'd say, now you be careful, like a Dad. Except the time he found a popcorn box I had thrown away on the street (dirt) in front of his shop, and made me GI the street for a block in all directions. LIKE A DAD, I GUESS.

Although it's great to go though the evolution of drag race cars, I always had a soft spot in my heart and I feel I was in my prime in the days of the car pictured. For many reasons. One big one being: you drove, tuned, built, and swept the floors. There was a great deal of satisfaction in doing it all when you won a race. YOU beat ‘em! That's why Garlits is so high in my book. Prudhomme was a driver ... 'nuff said. And one hell of a businessman! BUT GARLITS ALSO HAS THE FIRST DOLLAR HE EVER MADE! AND THE PENNY BEFORE THAT!
