JOLIET, Ill. - John Force became NHRA's all-time win leader Sunday with a
victory at the Prestone Route 66 Nationals. Gary Scelzi, Ron Krisher, Antron
Brown, and Bob Panella also were pro category winners at the $2 million
race, the 10th of 23 events in the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.
The win moved Force past Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden for the mark in
drag racing history and also extended his Winston Funny Car points lead over
arch rival Jerry Toliver. The win is Force's fourth straight victory of 2000
and fifth overall.
Force, from Yorba Linda, Calif., posted a run of 4.842 seconds at 318.09
mph to defeat WWF Racing's Toliver, who posted a run of 4.934 at 312.64 in a
Chevy Camaro. The run mirrored his Mustang's consistently quick performance
throughout the day in round wins over hometown favorite John Lawson, Tony
Pedregon, and Ron Capps. While it was Force's 86th career victory, it was
his first at the state-of-the-art Route 66 Raceway.
"I just tripped out," said Force, who was overcome with emotion
after reaching the milestone. "I felt like a kid again after that win.
I was so excited. It's the most awesome feeling in the world. We dedicated
this win to Austin Coil (crew chief) because he's from Chicago. He's the
guy. He's just brilliant and knows how to run a hot rod. He gets this
trophy."
Force started his NHRA career in 1978, but it took him nine years to win
his first national event. After hiring Coil in the late '80s, the
51-year-old driver dominated the category throughout the '90s, claiming nine
Winston championships and most of his victories.
Scelzi, from Fresno, Calif., rebounded from a spectacular crash on Friday
and used the backup car to win his 18th Top Fuel race, knocking off Larry
Dixon for the second time in as many weeks. Scelzi covered the quarter-mile
distance in 4.642 at 317.43 in his Team Winston dragster, edging Dixon's
Miller Lite dragster at the finish, which posted a slower 4.702 at 313.07.
Scelzi defeated Rhonda Hartman-Smith, Andrew Cowin, and Tony Schumacher
to advance to the final. Scelzi's semi-final victory over rival Schumacher
was one of the most dramatic races of the day, as the Team Winston
dragster's engine erupted into a ball of flame near the finish. Schumacher
lost traction, but recovered in time to make it close at the finish.
"The round against Tony was one of the toughest ones I've ever
had," said Scelzi, who increased his points lead to 60 over Dixon and
68 in front of third place Schumacher. "I knew I was in trouble right
off the starting line because I knew the motor was flat. The way it was
vibrating, I knew there might be a fire to come. I never saw Tony, so I
stayed in the gas. When the front wheels got to the finish line I shut it
off, hit the parachutes, and squeezed the brake, then Tony went by. Then the
fire flashed inside. You've got to have a lucky round to win and today we
had that lucky round against Schumacher."
Krisher, from Warren, Ohio, earned his first career Pro Stock victory by
keeping Troy Coughlin winless for his career. Krisher drove his Eagle One
Pontiac Firebird to a 6.888 at 199.43, outdistancing Coughlin's
Oldsmobile Cutlass, which ran 6.924 at 197.36. "We've been building
confidence this season but just doing some dumb things," said Krisher,
who was the top qualifier, set low elapsed time, and top speed in a
dominating performance. "Today we managed to control it and the car ran
consistent all day."
With the win, Krisher moved to third overall in the Winston point
standings. Jeg Coughlin defeated Warren Johnson in a rare first round match
and extended his Winston points lead to 266 over the five-time champ.
Brown, from Chesterfield, N.J., earned his fourth career Pro Stock
Motorcycle win and first of the season in an all-Suzuki final match with
Craig Treble. Brown covered the distance in 7.217 at 181.32 on his Team 23/AnythingOvernight.com
two-wheeler, while Treble posted a 7.264 at 182.21 on his Team Scream ride.
Brown's march to victory included round wins over Rob Short, Angelle Seeling,
and Matt Hines.
"This is pretty awesome," said Brown, who becomes the fourth
different bike winner of the season. "We faced the best out here today
and pulled it off. It was tough. Whenever you have to race Matt and Angelle
in the same day, and you can beat them, you've earned it. Craig's really
tough too. He's really quick on the starting line. That was a really close
final."
Seeling remained in the Winston points lead, 36 ahead of Hines. Brown
moved to fifth overall with the win.
Stockton, Calif.'s Panella took his third Pro Stock Truck victory of the
season and second straight at Route 66 Raceway, defeating arch rival Randy
Daniels in an all Chevy S-10 final. Panella clocked a 7.530 at
177.42 to edge the 7.535 at 178.87 performance of Daniels' machine.
"This place has been good for me and I'm not sure what it is,"
said Panella. "I've been so busy trying to figure out how to beat that
blue and white truck (Daniels) that I just realized that I also won here
last year. It's good to get back on the winning track. This win is very
important at this time of the season when we're focusing on winning another
championship."
Panella increased his Winston points lead to 33 over Daniels with the
victory.
