2001 Gatornationals Friday Qualifying

By NHRA.com

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- John Force led Funny Car qualifying Friday at the 32nd annual Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Gary Scelzi, Darrell Alderman, Antron Brown and Randy Daniels were also leaders in their respective categories at the $2 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series event, the third of 24 races in the $50 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Force, a six-time Gatornationals winner, clocked a 4.815-second run at 317.19 mph in the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to lead the 16-car field.

"That was a fast ride," said Force, who leads Frank Pedregon, Del Worsham, and Ron Capps, who also posted runs in the 4.80s. "It jerked the front end up at the start but finally settled down and motored on down the track. We've definitely got the air and the racetrack to put up some good numbers this weekend."

Scelzi powered his Team Winston dragster to a 4.576 at 322.58 to lead the Top Fuel lineup.

"This is a great way to start," said three-time Top Fuel champ Scelzi, who is looking for his first Gatornationals victory this weekend. "This one has eluded us for whatever reason. I think we should've won this race the last two years but mechanical problems got us. We tested at Phoenix after the last race and I think we're seeing the results. We had two good runs today. I think by tomorrow we'll see some of the other guys come around and they'll be right there too."

Alderman topped the Pro Stock order, covering the distance in 6.874 at 200.29 in his Team Mopar Dodge R/T.

Brown was quickest in Pro Stock Motorcycle on a Suzuki, running 7.249 at 187.91.

Daniels led Pro Stock Truck qualifying, recording a track record time of 7.488 at 179.28 in a Chevy S-10.
