Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Flying Six Cylinder from Down Under

By Ash McFee

We made a last minute decision to do some R&D at the Heathcote Park street shootout last week, after some sponsorship money came through.

We were lucky to even make it after we got not one, but two flat tires on the trailer on the way up.

Once there we got the first run out of the way... it felt good -- nice and straight and felt way fast. The time came up as an 11.2 @ 120 mph. Good going for a non-supercharged, six-cylinder/small capacity street car on 13-inch street tires and full exhaust. The accuracy of that run was questioned by a few disbelieving people, especially after the remaining runs were all horrible attempts at getting traction.

It was like watching a Top fueler do a run on a cobblestone road...on and off the accelerator, spinning the tires in every gear, over revving, getting sideways and crossing the centerline twice (allegedly) on separate runs.

Next time out, which will probably be November 18th at the next Heathcote Shootout, the car will have:

Slicks (14 x 9)
New much more extensively ported cylinder head with bigger valves & springs
Sweet roller rockers
Electronic ignition
Front Runners
Better Cam
Open Exhaust
Air Filters Off
A MUCH WISER DRIVER WITH BIGGER BALLS THIS TIME AROUND AS WELL...

I suppose, apart from the 11.2, the other highlight was going a few rounds in eliminations after entering late and also the 30-second static burnout on the last run that nearly got me disqualified (YET AGAIN).

I'm trying now to find out if any others have gone quicker with naturally aspirated (inline) six cylinder street cars on such small street tires. The car was set up as a genuine daily driver.... and there are very strict rules and regs for road cars where I live, especially for young drivers like myself.

I guess next time out, under full race trim, we'll see just how accurate that 11 second number was...kinda scary to think what it could do if it is genuine!

9's perhaps?
