I just read your note on how the good old days of drag racing seem to be
gone (10/05 Story of the Day). I am a bit older
than you are but I raced Old Bridge before it was Englishtown, and joined
the Air Force. Many years later; three years ago to be exact, I got back
into it. First a bracket car, then when it was too slow. Then a 9-second
screamer but still brackets... too boring.
This year, after a call to an old friend named Connie, who seemed to not
be able to make up his mind whether he was going to drive or tune, I decided
to get into a blower car. Well friend, my skin may be wrinkled but the
twinkle in my old eyes overshadows all those years.
I made it into the finals this year at Michigan Motorplex in Top
Sportsman and blew the motor at over two hundred miles per hour and under
seven seconds trying to beat some pimply faced kid who was having a tough time
with the old man. Ya know, it didn't bother me so much to lose to him
because neither one of us will ever forget it. Chin up guy and enjoy the
past...but don't forget the here and now.
Respectfully,
Joe Buckley
