The 48th World Series of Drag Racing will be remembered as being a rain-soaked affair, with showers postponing eliminations until the final day, Sunday. With 16 classes of racing, it proved to be a test of endurance for drivers and their entries. A record car count in the sportsman classes added up to 7 rounds to the finals in Street and Super Modified.

Gary and Dale Klavon of Port Byron, IL went the distance, with each of the brothers making the finals at 9pm that evening. Gary Klavon drove his four-speed 1965 Chevelle to a runner-up trophy in Super Modified, while Dale went undefeated in Street class with his 1968 Camaro. It was an emotional victory for the Klavon brothers in their winning efforts. Most unusual was the fact that Gary was at a disadvantage in a class that allows electronics, choosing instead to do it the old-fashioned way with a manual transmission car. His driving skills were dead-on throughout the 10 passes of the day, never skipping a shift with the wheelstanding Chevy. Brother Dale took the victory in Street, a foot brake, non-electronics class that started with 80 cars in round one. Posting consistent 12 second passes despite the changing weather and conditions, it was his first Championship at the legendary Cordova Dragway.

It was not the first time that brothers have won World Series titles. The Lindle family of Princeton, Iowa accomplished that feat a few years ago when Jerry and Tom Lindle both arrived in the winner's circle at once. This year, it was Tom Lindle and brother Scott posing for the pictures after the tire smoke cleared. It was Tom's second World Series title in Top Eliminator, an all-out class usually dominated by his older brother. Scott went out in round two of Top Eliminator, but managed to win the prestigious Quick 8 class sponsored by dragracingonline.com. "I entered it on a whim," said Scott Lindle. "I never thought I would get past the nitro-fuel altered in round one, and in the second round David Koehler gave me a run for the money. I had Don Speer in the finals, and I guess it was just my day. Unbelievable!"
